Shaped like a German handgrenade, the beer won’t blow up the taste buds with anything unusual, but it you will be happy that you took the time to drink this. An aroma of sweet caramel malts, earthy hops, slightly nutty, and a bit oxidized. A ruddy brown, hazy color with a 1-finger thick head. Caramel malts, grassy with just a touch of spices makes this one a drinker. Reminded me of a subdued English barleywine in some ways. Very tasty beer. I enjoyed this one much more than their Dopple Sticke. FishManLA (290), Abita Springs, Louisiana, USA
| 3.8 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 4/5 | 8/10 | 4/5 | 15/20 | May 18, 2008 Muddy brown color with a smallish off-white head that dissipates fairly quickly. A little bit of lacing. Clean, simple, malty nose. Dry on that palate with a delicious hoppy bitter taste. Hoppy dry finish. BMan1113VR (2815), Los Angeles (and Dallas), Texas, USA
| 3.5 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 4/5 | 6/10 | 4/5 | 14/20 | May 15, 2008 Listed at 6%. Pours with a small, off-white, rocky head covering a slightly murky brown body. Some lacing left over. Aroma has some raisins, dark fruits and sweet malts. Taste is odd, buttery corn, some DMS, smoked elements, rochefort notes, and completely lacks any sweetness whatsoever. Savory and some hints of oxidation. I am not sure how to treat this as it is only my second Alt, and I am not sure how true to the style the other one I had was. This is very drinkable, but no sweetness is very different after all the barely wines that I have been drinking recently. BlackDonald (1127), Boise, Idaho, USA
| 3.2 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 6/10 | 4/5 | 6/10 | 3/5 | 13/20 | May 8, 2008 Pretty standard, but pretty tasty nonetheless. Hops are a little more present in this one, beautiful lacing! Sweet nutty caramel notes, some light frutiiness, slightly bitter finish. DougShoemaker (2856), Toronto, Canada
| 3.5 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 4/5 | 7/10 | 3/5 | 14/20 | Apr 29, 2008 Aroma of rich malt, caramel, some fruit is noted, copper, with a small toffee head, occasional rise of carbonation. Taste is roasted malt, almonds and dark berries. Light bodied, well balanced, dry and bitter. Very tasty example. scrizzz (1265), kirkland, Washington, USA
| 3.4 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 5/10 | 4/5 | 7/10 | 4/5 | 14/20 | Apr 28, 2008 billowing 4+ finger head suggests i poured it too quickly from the narrow extra long necked bottle. frothy foamy head rose tall out of the glass like an ice cream cone. clear caramel color. faintest aromas of grain and wood in the background, i was expecting more with the previous ratings. rich smooth clean malty base with a creeping of pleasantly balanced hops in the finish. | 3.9 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 8/10 | 3/5 | 7/10 | 4/5 | 17/20 | Apr 12, 2008 Smells like a barley wine. Dark red-brown in color with a beige head. Mid to heavy bodied. Very smooth drinker. Hoppy yet not too bitter. I wish that it was brewed more than two times per year. biz82 (1328), austin, Texas, USA
| 3.5 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 8/10 | 3/5 | 7/10 | 3/5 | 14/20 | Apr 10, 2008 Dark red with some bits in solution and a nice beige head. Quality German caramel malt and floral hop aroma with notes of brown bread and raisin. A little tart and a bit thin. The flavor is not as good as the aroma would suggest. It has noticeable hop flavor and bitterness. Not bad but I fear it has not traveled well.
