Nice deep maltiness with aromas of toffee, caramelization and ginger bread. Deep earthy hops and notes of oak. Malt and hop combination gives the impression of an earthy single malt scotch. Fairly sweet but firmly bitter and well-balanced. This is really nice and a personal epiphany for the style. I’d be happy to drink this regularly. BDR (2170), Roseville, Minnesota, USA

I enjoyed the Goetta, but the beer was the real treat. Poured from the tap a deep red-brown color with a thick, creamy tan head that left abundant lacing on the glass. Aroma is always difficult to detect in the bar setting, but caramel and toast were evident. The flavor was subtle yet rich and opened up as the beer warmed (it was quite cold at the beginning). Rich layers of caramel, toast, brown sugar and hints of fruit (a touch of grape, a hint of cherry) led to a surprisingly bitter earthy hops finish with metallic notes. As the beer warmed the sweet caramely malts and toast became more dominant. Very rich mouthfeel- this is one smooth beverage. Glad I made it to Steinkeller for the 8:00 tapping- the keg was empty at 8:29! Thanks Rick (clmojo) for the updates (and that glass of Kulmbacher)! NYHarvey (2154), New York, New York, USA

Light amber in color with a head that is both creamy and bubbly. Has a deep fruity sweetness in the fore followed by a crisp, but tongue coating flavor of peanut skins. Never come across that before in a beer. jsquire (2123), St. Marys, Ohio, USA
| 3.3 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 6/10 | 3/5 | 6/10 | 3/5 | 15/20 | Apr 12, 2004 Deep amber out of the bottle with only a film for a head. Bottle says "Bottled on 29.04." Fruity notes with lots of toast and caramel sweetness. The finish is a little watery. Nice hop bitterness in the finish. Tastes a little like underdone home brew. href=http://www.ratebeer.com/ViewUser.asp?U target=blank> beerhugger, thanks Steve. Copper in colour, off-white head (good retention), some lace. The aroma is malty (cookies, caramel), some citrus hops and some smoke. The flavour was malty (cookies, bready, caramel), slightly sweet, cirtus hops, nutty. Bitter mouthfeel, medium body, medium carbonation. Finishes with a lingering hop bite, dry. Quite nice.
