Aroma is mainly sweet doughy malt with some fruitiness.
Taste is nice and subtle. Nuts and toffee emerge from the malt, while a leafy tannic hop bitterness tickles the tongue on the finish. Endlessly toasty and mellow.
Carbonation is modest but gets the job done. This beer is exceptionally smooth. The light bitterness in the finish tempts you into the next sip.
The subtle sweetness and refreshing hop zest make this beer outlandishly drinkable. A tad high in alcohol to be sessionable but the flavor is perfect to that end. A very good beer and a great introduction into the altbier style. I’ll definitely be coming back to this one. HighGravity (890), Baltimore, Maryland, USA

The nose of the beer is mostly malty with a dash of hops. The color of the beer is light auburn. Carbonation levels are low, but this makes the beer easy to drink. I find the beer hard to describe, it reminds me of a light bock or a big dunkel. This beer is good if you are in the mood for a beer on the malty side. GodOfThunder (878), Orlando, Florida, USA
| 3.4 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 6/10 | 4/5 | 7/10 | 3/5 | 14/20 | Dec 7, 2008 Draft at Redlight. Pours an amber color with a corn, grain and brown sugar smell. Taste is slightly sweet and slightly bitter from the hops. Good beer. Numenor (869), Richmond, Virginia, USA
| 3.8 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 8/10 | 5/5 | 7/10 | 4/5 | 14/20 | Feb 3, 2006 Light white head with a ruby body. Sweet aroma similar to the Stone Double Bastard. Hops and malts are very present in it. Sharp initial taste with a slight caramel flavoring. Some bitterness typical of German beers in the ending. ultraspank (866), Dublin, Ohio, USA
| 4 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 8/10 | 3/5 | 8/10 | 5/5 | 16/20 | Dec 12, 2005 Had one of these at the Winking Lizard. Should have kept the bottle. Light floral and
fruit notes dominate the subtle but very pleasant nose. Caramel tones leak out a bit as
brew warms. The brew pours a dark color characteristic of mahogany or walnut. The tall
off white frothy head is mostly lasting with good lace character. The brew starts nice and
malty with moderate acidity and exceptional balance with a nice long full finish. The
medium creamy and soft body has an astringent feel to the finish. Exceptional offering. krisbierjaeger (844), dolores, Colorado, USA

| 3.9 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 4/5 | 8/10 | 4/5 | 16/20 | Jun 15, 2009 Pours a cloudy brown color with a sticky tan head that leaves plenty of lacing. Sticky(e) and thick sweet caramel and malts aroma. Pretty bitter and malty. Palate is thick and sticky. Creamy texture to it. This is like what a German IPA would taste like. The only bad thing about this beer is the price. afireinside96 (839), Mountville, Pennsylvania, USA
| 3.2 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 8/10 | 3/5 | 6/10 | 3/5 | 12/20 | Jul 28, 2008 Bottle shared by The_Captain. Thanks Mark. Pours hazy brown with a foamy tan head. Smells of dough, caramel, brown sugar, dark fruit. After smelling it I was expecting a rich, complex flavor but all I really tasted was an earthy bitter dough flavor. It was good, just not as amazing as I was expecting after reading reviews of it.
