Aug 19, 2009 bottled 10/08, rated 08/09. swingtop to shaker pint. aroma is dark almost smoky caramel. very nice head sits atop very cloudy amber, nearly brown, beer. flavor is of yeast and malty caramel, but without displaying much sweetness. a bit grainy in the finish. in the war of kolschs against alts, im an alt-man all the way, and this beer is one example.

Apr 21, 2009 11.2oz flip top bottle. Possibly the coolest bottle ever. Interesting beer. Pours a hazy brown with lots of sediment. A bit pricey but worth checking out at least for a taste. Looking forward to trying doppel sticke.

Oct 26, 2008 Pours a very murky brown in color. Very little head on the pour. Only a ring of froth around the edges. Smell is very caramel and port like. Age has done this beer wonders. Very creamy and very dark malts. Plenty of aged sherry like port in the flavor. This was a huge surprise. Very well done.

Jan 16, 2009 On tap at the Bavarian Lodge, Lisle, Il. Properly served in an altbier glass. Dark amber hue with a diminishing, white head and thick, solid lacing. The aroma had a touch of yeast, floral, and light fruit notes. The flavor also adds a nice malt and dryness combo. The mouthfeel is crisp and clean, with lively carbonation.

Aug 31, 2009 Dark brown pour with a small white head. Aroma holds some definite fruity esters, grain and wheat malt, and some nuttiness, especially almonds. Flavor has lots of dry malt, grain, almond, hazelnut, and a bit of caramel. The fruitiness provides an interesting second layer to the overall character of the taste. Palate isn’t thick, but the flavor lingers very nicely, and the finish is pretty dry. A good brew.

Jul 28, 2008 Pop top bottle- Amber brown pour with a tan foam head. Aroma of brown sugar, dark fruits, caramel. Smooth on the palate and malty but with a bit of a dry aftertaste and tinge of bitters. Good Alt and good flavor, a little bitter and earthy on the back end.

Dec 18, 2004 Clear light amber brown with thick off-white head. Light malt nose with faint hops. Rich mouthfeel with a sweet start and srying bitter finish. Rich malt flavor with cherry, hops, and vanilla. Really good, wow!

Dec 10, 2004 Spicy Spalt hop aroma, herbal and piney. Clear dark copper, thick beige head. Great balance of nutty malt and piney hops in the flavor. Lingering bitterness, with a slight hop-derived astringency. Medium-full body. A really nicely balanced German ale, very tasty.
