JMFG (1173), Florida, USA May 24, 2008 Dark brown pour with a rocky light tan head. Interesting aroma - sweet and yeasty like most Unibroue, but there’s nice touches of an anise or clove-like tone present that reminds me of those root beer barrel hard candies. The taste has more classic Unibroue spiciness, but there is a defined malt base here, and the anise tones are still present. It would’ve been nice to have some of the yeastiness toned down a bit, because I sense some nice subtle notes below, but it’s still a nice brew, and not too close to the Unibroue-by-numbers these releases can seem to be.
Strykzone (1019), Wood River, Illinois, USA Oct 11, 2008 Dark brown pour with a small tan head. Wood flavor with yeast and coconut(?), wood, and vanilla. Nicely complex and some super spice flavors. Did not expect coconut. Pleasant zest. Almost with the best of its breed. Maria (4418), Thisted, Denmark Oct 11, 2008 Courtesy of oh6gdx. It’s red-brown with a creamy head. The aroma is rather complex with notes of spice, oak, vanilla and pumpkin. The flavour has sweetness and notes of alcohol, vanilla, oak, spice, caramel, raisin and pumpkin. It’s complex, but needs maturing to develop the full potential. amish_caravan (212), Winona, Minnesota, USA Oct 11, 2008 pours heavy with lots of head. dark amber color with a scent of fermented fruit and some caramel. very smooth taste with tones of malt and fruit. finish is smooth with a warming feeling as it goes down. would purchase again. Veer (333), Landskrona, Sweden Oct 10, 2008 Aroma: sourish, yeast, coriander, citrus, cranberries, caramelt malt, darker malt, vanilla, coconut... Vinous, mint... armagnac... butter flavoured popcorns.
Flavour: sweetish, powerful, mild rowanberry, malty, yeasty. This is great. Vaguely of saffron (semi-bitter). Roasted apple lingers throughout. Green grapes. A bit too mild & sweet to score higher.
Palate: soft, fizzy as usual (with Unibroue) - though not overpowering.
Appearance: slightly murky deep red copper body w/ frothy yellowish beige head leaving rustic lacing. Todeon (214), Höllviken, Sweden Oct 6, 2008 Bottle. Really sweet taste with lots of raisans and some caramel. Malty and sweet finish.
