Very sweet. The alcohol is noticeable but because of the sweetness, it doesn’t adversely affect the drinkability. In my opinion, the sweetness makes it a little difficult to drink. Little hop flavor. The various grains give it a nice complex flavor.

Opened 10/20/2007. Unlike Edition 2004, this one aged really well. Nice tight head that stays in the glass well after you pour it. The bottle didn’t gush, the cork didn’t seem messed up. Low carbonation. Somewhat like a dubbel with low hop flavor, big yeast flavor, a decent amount of sweetness and some darker grains for complexity. Very smooth, very drinkable. Some clove, some banana in the background, lots of raisin/fig probably from the yeast as well as crystal malts in the 80-120L range. Noble hops are somewhere in the background, but definitely not big hop flavor. A very fine beer.

8/15/05. 750ml. Dark brown with beige head. Malty yeasty aroma. Taste with too much unprocessed Candi sugar.

Bottling date 11/23/04. Pours a deep mahogany brown with minimal translucency. Creates a nice tight, thick beige head with admirable retention throughout the glass. No lacing observed. Rich, complex aromas of raisins, figs, anise, ripe plums, chocolate, along with a touch of faint clove, citrus, dark rum and banana in the background. Silky smooth and full mouthfeel with an unexpected slightly diminished fine carbonation for a Belgian Ale. Nevertheless an enjoyable texture on the tongue. Taste starts out with sweet flavors of dark dried fruits, dark brown sugar, chocolate, freshly baked dark bread; then gradually slides into a presentation of spices (clove, anise and coriander come to mind), roasted Belgian malts and a touch of late appearing hops. Alcohol is fairly muscular but not at all intrusive. Very warming and flavor enhancing. Finishes warm and sweet like a fine dessert. A great sipper.

Pours out a deep walnut colour with a rocky tan head that fades slowly to a dense cap and laces a bit. The aroma is of sweet blueberry jam, figs, candied sugar and some alcohol peircing through. I can dectect some subtle acidity on the nose, too. The flavour is a bit more muted than the aroma, as this beer is very aromatic. Flavours of dried fruits, raisins, port, molasses and other rich and sweet malty flavours grace the palate. It tastses like the beer might have been spiced mildly with corriander and maybe cardomom. The finish is similar to the aroma and is warming and drying, while the aftertaste brings a touch of roast, chocolate and brandy. Very smooth, tingly palate and warming quality makes this brew that much more enjoyable. I wish this wasn’t so limited and that I could drink it again!
