So I see the 9% ABV, and I’m thinking, is this a barleywine? It’s quite light and clear, perhaps the palest color I’ve ever seen from that strength of beer. It tasted quite wheaty, almost reminding me of a hefeweizen. Kind of strange but very nice. igneous1 (1374), Davenport, Iowa, USA

| 4.2 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 4/5 | 9/10 | 4/5 | 18/20 | Dec 1, 2007 Had this beer on 6/2/2007. Aroma is light with a sweet malt scent. Color is bright gold with very active carbonation and a thick loose head. Taste is mild and sweet. Starting with a medium body it goes down crisp. Finish comes on with a sweet malt flavor backed by a fruity Belgian yeast taste. After there is a mild bitterness and a warm feel. Overall it has a true Belgian taste in a well rounded strong brew. ilovedarkbeer (1367), Dallas, Texas, USA

Smells like a hefeweizen (german wheat and plsner malt) With lots of yeast. Mouthfeel is honey like with a little bit of sting on the end. Tastes like honey and fruit and malt. Pretty good. | 2.8 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 6/10 | 3/5 | 5/10 | 3/5 | 11/20 | Apr 29, 2004 When the news broke about Sleeman taking over Unibroue I thought, oh well, its not the end of the world. Well, while this one is I hope that its age has something to do with the quality of this beer. I bought this from a grog shop which used to be known for its great variety of beers. Now it is concentrating on wine and so I only found this after a bit of poking around. It was sitting there with 2 of its colleagues and so I thought it was a bargain to buy 3 for $10. My first point before reviewing this is therefore that I had tried a beer of indeterminate age, but given that this is ’on lees’ I would have thought that age would not weary, but improve this beer. Anyway it poured as a medium orange beer with a thin head. Very low in carbonation too. The nose is a pleasant light sultana with fleeting citrus notes. The flavour may be the result of bottle time as this has a distinctive sherry like character with a bit of mustiness. The body for this ABV is surprising as it tastes quite thin. The dry back palate is acceptable but apart from the alcohol kick that eventually arrives I don’t feel it really be the end of the world if Sleeman makes changes to the Unibroue range. Maudite and Trois Pistoles are the standouts to me with all the others being also rans. Dorqui (1361), Brescia, Italy
| 4.1 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 9/10 | 4/5 | 8/10 | 4/5 | 16/20 | Mar 19, 2006 Updated: Sep 16, 2007Bottled 0,33L. Much voluminous and faomy head, optimal adhesion and duration. Orange clearly color, much loads and hazy with an optimal fizz... rich of sediments and yeasts. Powerful and much alcoholic scent with sweetish notes of must, clear mildew and cellar. Warm and wrapping taste, enough pungent and overbearing alcoholic. Long and long-lasting end. jaymobrown (1360), Chicago, Illinois, USA
| 3.7 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 4/5 | 7/10 | 3/5 | 16/20 | Nov 17, 2002 Very classic Belgian ale. Light hazy lemon color, much like lemonade. Oranges and light fruit, spice, and alcohol. Dry finish. The alcohol is really strong throughout, which some may not enjoy as it sits on the palate. For those that like stron ales this is worth checking out.
