Commercial Description:
In November 1992 Maudite (the damned one), was the first strong beer to be distributed in Quebec grocery stores. Maudite is a mahogany-colored, rich-tasting premium beer that has a distinctive, complex taste. Because of the warmth it releases, this strong character beer must be served cool but not cold. Perfect with pasta, red meats, stews and spicy dishes, it also makes a good aperitif and after-dinner drink.
Maudite has a typically Quebecois name that is reminiscent of the legend of the Chasse-Galerie (the legend of the Flying Canoe). Legend has it that a group of lumberjacks struck a deal with the devil to fly home in their canoes, guided by Satan himself, to make it home in time for Christmas.
Gold medal winner in 1995 and 1996 and the Chicago Beverage Tasting Institute.

On tap at Ray’s into tulip. Murky orange brown pour with a quickly deflating off-white head. A slight funkiness in the aroma and even more slight in the flavor, spicy clove, nutmeg, allspice. Interesting because it wasn’t like other belgian strongs I’ve had but not outstanding in my opinion.

Bottle. Pours reddish amber with a medium beige head. Beautiful spicy aroma and flavour of bread loaf, nutmeg, spice, fruit and toffee. Smooth and warming mouthfeel. A delicate beer, it’s hard to flaw. A great interpretation of a classic style.

12 oz. bottle. Pours a slightly hazy reddish-brown with a small, foamy, white head. Boozy fruit, cherries, cinnamon, clove, and mace make up the nose. High carbonation with a light mouthfeel. It has a nice dryness to it. Clove, mace, slight dustiness, an herbal note, oak, and light stone fruit make up the palate. A long, spicy finish. A very interesting brew! You would think all of the spice notes would ruin the beer, but this one pulls it off. A wee bit on the spiced side for me, but still a very good brew.

750ml bottle. Pours red with a nice white head. Flavor is strong in fruit and yeast. Nice mouthfeel and carbonation level for the style. Very enjoyable!

Pours a cloudy brown with thinner head. Smells of sap and spice with some alcohol. Pretty appetizing and characteristically Belgian. Taste hits right up front with a fruity spice that reminds me of dried mango treated with chile pepper. Some spicy bread. Very nice mouth feel and aftertaste.

Original review date 7/21/2008... From 750 into Ommegang chalice... Deep, cloudy mahogany color. Noted head to be intermittent between pours - the first dissipated quickly but the second was coffee ice-cream colored, about 1 finger thick and bountiful. Moderate visible carbonation. Beautiful scent of malt, yeast, fermented raisins, maybe figs and spices. Solid malt backbone meshes nicely. With warmth, deeper caramel scents emerge - nice. Clean with very very very slight horse blanket feel. Carbonation tingles nicely to make this lighter than expected while maintaining strong flavor profile - sweetness, alcohol and malt profile are nicely balanced. This has a wonderful feel to it - deep and strong with very light tingle on mouth that cuts through, clarifies the essence extremely well. From start to finish this offering is hearty but clean. ’tis a good one. The heft from the alcohol and the huge package of flavors creates great, strong body but carbonation keeps it clean.

750 mL bottle from Pacific Liquor in North Park (San Diego, CA). Pours a dark amber color, bordering on brown. Three fingers of white head dissipates to a consistent one centimeter. Strong aroma of yeast also has musty/dusty, wood, and some spice -- an altogether "earthy" aroma. Flavor is very complex and has a lot going on including sweet caramel maltiness, various fruit flavors (berry, raisin), and nice spice. Great finish with notes of caramel and bittersweet chocolate. The flavor is very well balanced and any indication of alcohol is completely absent. Another excellent one from Unibroue!

I love Unibroue. About 10 years ago I was introduced to their beers and I fell in love. Not like a mother loves her child...it’s much more than this. At first they were not so easy to find but through the years they have been easier to locate. I was surprise to find them in our local Publix grocery store!
