Immiz182 (17), Appleton, Wisconsin, USA Dec 22, 2008 Fantastic beer. One of the best Belgian Strong Ales I have had. Nice head, good color, very flavorful and great aftertaste. I cannott think of any negatives about this beer. mansquito (819), Boston/Philadelphia, USA Dec 22, 2008 Big foamy looking head that sticks around for quite a while. Body is a cloudy (muddy) brown color. Aroma of cloves and other spices along with a chock full of fruit smells, mostly banana. Bitterswwet front that melts into sweetness and then brings out a dry and bitter aftertaste. Banana taste is in there, along with a pleasant amount of hops. Pretty nice beer overall, worth trying by all people. unclemattie (2370), Georgia, USA Dec 18, 2008 The first time I had this beer was 5 years ago. The bottle was a birthday gift from my ex.father.in.law. He siad he thought it was a cool label. I do not think he knew what the meaningof the name was. Pours a slightly hazy reddish brown. White foamy head. Aroma of belgian yeast, figs, dates, rich malt. Very complex scent. Flavor is a strong bodied malt. Lots of dark dried fruits. More complex flavors than in the aroma. Wow. Overall this bottle reminds me of a heavy doppelbock made with a belgian yeast. Happiness in a warm glass. I could have a tap of this in the house and never leave again. ROGUE (621), Newark, Delaware, USA Dec 16, 2008 750ml bottle. Pours a mahogany color with a thick head. Aroma of yeast, banana, and cherry. Taste is extremely sweet with fruity and floral tones as in the smell. It also has a hoppy bitterness to balance things. Medium bodied with heavy carbonation. An easy drinking strong ale. 41cubs (131), , New Jersey, USA Dec 15, 2008 Extraordinarily average. What a disappointment, especially for a unibroue fan and an someone with an appreciation for the taste of yeast in beer. Dank, murky, muddled smell, like pond water after a storm. Look is light brown, translucent dirt floored dirty bar toilet water with bright white bubbles for a head. Flavor taste like a belgian but as if they were to frugal to devote the proper amount of ingredients to the pot, not enough of anything to make it taste right. Palate is very smooth, almost satiny across the tongue. Very average beer for an above average producer. Sorry. 2008 22 oz bomber. Travlr (694), Washington, Washington DC, USA Dec 13, 2008 Muddy brown with medium head. Aroma of cinnamon and allspice. Full bodied, tastes of brown sugar and malt. A keeper. dpjuart (670), Indiana, Pennsylvania, USA Dec 9, 2008 Pours red with amber hues and a white foamy head, 1/4 inch. Spicy apple nose with brown sugar and caramel. Taste is apple and raisin with brown sugar and alcohol. Very Unibroue-esque. Tasty, but not very different from their lineup. tarheels86 (700), Washington DC, USA Dec 7, 2008 Updated: Sep 2, 2009Pours a murky brownish orange with a small tan head that fizzles down nicely. Aromas of yeast, dark fruits, raw cane sugar, caramel malt. Taste is bubbly up front then subsides for a Grand Marnier-like kick with some warming alcohol at the end but the 8% is nicely hidden. Creamy mouthfeel. Dry and spicy aftertaste. Awesome. <P>
Re-rate 9.2.09: 750 mL. Beautiful in the glass: a cloudy raspberry color. Big tan head with excellent retention. Aroma is cherry cola, lots of mustiness, earthiness, dirt. Taste is a bit chemical, yeasty. Dry on the palate. 8% is well hidden. Not as spectacular as I remember.
