Commercial Description:
In November 1992 Maudite (the damned one), was the first strong beer to be distributed in Quebec grocery stores. Maudite is a mahogany-colored, rich-tasting premium beer that has a distinctive, complex taste. Because of the warmth it releases, this strong character beer must be served cool but not cold. Perfect with pasta, red meats, stews and spicy dishes, it also makes a good aperitif and after-dinner drink.
Maudite has a typically Quebecois name that is reminiscent of the legend of the Chasse-Galerie (the legend of the Flying Canoe). Legend has it that a group of lumberjacks struck a deal with the devil to fly home in their canoes, guided by Satan himself, to make it home in time for Christmas.
Gold medal winner in 1995 and 1996 and the Chicago Beverage Tasting Institute.

Roughly 3 oz. pour from a 12 oz. bottle, consumed at a beer tasting on 4-12-08. This has been aging in my cellar for about a year. Sweet Belgian beer smell (what a shocker!). Clean, soapy, yeasty aroma that is very pleasant. Pear scent. Pours a light brown, somewhat amber color. Effervescent. Small amount of beige head. Accessible taste. Candy sugar and apple juice flavors. Light to medium body. Frothy in the palate. Very interesting texture that produces a mixed reaction from me. Easy to drink.

12oz bottle. POured into a Chimay glass. Small off white head. Lots of carb. Nice mahogany color. Smell of yeast, raisins and alcohol, nose is kinda boring. Taste is great thought. Bananna and clove up front with a bit of spice and raisins, plum and alcohol on the back end with a slight alcohol burn. Smooth and very drinkable. Balanced carbonation. Very good.

Unibroue Maudite - My 100th ratebeer entry. ABV: 8% Calories: estimated at 200C Volume: 12 fl oz Glass: 4 oz goblet Purchased at: The Beer Outlet, Unibrour Sampler case, $64 Price: $2.66 Consumed at: Home sensory first impression: Off white head on a dark red ruby body. Very pretty. Fruity aroma. Taste is cherry, banana, deliciously (?) metallic, fruity. Good weighty body, affects all areas of the mouth - very layered with a long, tantalizing aftertaste. Aroma: 9 out of 10 Malt Hop Yeast Other flavors include: cherry, apple, banana, orange, lime, lemon, sweet, dry, crisp, crackers. Visuals: 5 out of 5 Color Liquid Head and lace are: beautiful clear, dark red ruby brick color, wispy head, mostly disappearing, but the color and flavor makes up for it. Varied body is very interesting. Taste: 9 out of 10 Malty Sweet Hoppy Bitter Sour flavors are: bitter, sour, and long lasting. One of the best aftertastes I’ve encountered. Palate: 5 out of 5 Body Mouthfeel Texture Carbonation Finish are: great carbonation, finish, taste, and body. Weighty, substantial presence, creamy fruity experience, deep and lasting finish of fruity overtones and just a fantastic signature. Overall experience: 18 out of 20. I liked the body, color, brand, aroma, fruit, signature flavors, darkness, depth, and invariably everything else. A fitting beer for my 100th sampling.

pours cloudy brown. rocky half inch head that lasts. smells like cloves, banana, bubble gum. really fizzy palate in a distracting way for me. taste follows the nose but more heat from the alcohol. DONT EVEN BOTHER UNTIL IT WARMS UP. or try it cold and then watch how much a beer can open up as it approaches the right temp! kinda mossy but super light tasting. picking up a rubber balloon taste too. im still kinda confused.

pours a dark cloudy apple cider color with a big 21/2 finger light tan fluffy head. aroma is Belgian yeast with some pineapple and melon. has a medium body with descent lacing and good carbonation. flavor is the same as aroma but a bit stronger. its good. it is a little more carbonated which makes it feel lighter than the other unibroue brews’.

Bottle - Deep red colort, one finger pink head. Aroma: Blackcurrant and flaxseed, some tomato there too and dare I say ginger too? Flavour: Big mouthfeel, malt & hop, shoe polish (not in a bad way) and sourness, wood and pine there too, very nice!

Draft at Oldsmar Tap House. Excellent strong ale and surprised this is not Belgian. Flavors are a perfect balance of spice, clove, and apricot. Strength is just right. Pours brown-orange with a nice head.

Brownish orange color that poured absolutely no head. Almost like they wanted it to look flat (or pour like wine). The aroma is spiced vanilla with quite a bit of yeast. The taste is spicy vanilla citrus turning pretty sour at the end. The alcohol is very evident. How can people say that Unibroue isn’t going for the wine/champagne thing? They even put gold foil on the end of the bottle like a champagne bottle.
