Commercial Description:
In November 1992 Maudite (the damned one), was the first strong beer to be distributed in Quebec grocery stores. Maudite is a mahogany-colored, rich-tasting premium beer that has a distinctive, complex taste. Because of the warmth it releases, this strong character beer must be served cool but not cold. Perfect with pasta, red meats, stews and spicy dishes, it also makes a good aperitif and after-dinner drink.
Maudite has a typically Quebecois name that is reminiscent of the legend of the Chasse-Galerie (the legend of the Flying Canoe). Legend has it that a group of lumberjacks struck a deal with the devil to fly home in their canoes, guided by Satan himself, to make it home in time for Christmas.
Gold medal winner in 1995 and 1996 and the Chicago Beverage Tasting Institute.

Draft at Oldsmar Tap House. Excellent strong ale and surprised this is not Belgian. Flavors are a perfect balance of spice, clove, and apricot. Strength is just right. Pours brown-orange with a nice head.

Brownish orange color that poured absolutely no head. Almost like they wanted it to look flat (or pour like wine). The aroma is spiced vanilla with quite a bit of yeast. The taste is spicy vanilla citrus turning pretty sour at the end. The alcohol is very evident. How can people say that Unibroue isn’t going for the wine/champagne thing? They even put gold foil on the end of the bottle like a champagne bottle.

Aroma was light malty and quite yeasty. Small head which disappeared quickly and almost not lace.. Flavor somewhat sweet with a moderate bitter finish. Considering it’s reputation, I was disappointed. Uni’s other brews are better.

I love this beer. Cloudy, dark amber. Has elements of honey to it. A great beer to just sit and relax with.

This one was far too yeasty for my tastes, but still a very pleasant brew. It had a hotdog taste to it that was very subdued, but coming from a finer BSA it stuck out like a sore thumb initially. I didn’t notice it too much after drinking for a few sips. The nose smells like hotdogs throughout though, like Blue Moon does, and that draws down significantly on this one in my book. Overall, just an average beer for me.

Leads Belgian but finishes with what I might characterize as an astringent quality. I found carbonation too fine and intense. Overall mouthfeel subtracted from what clearly are sophisticated flavors. I appreciate Maudite, but wouldn’t put it on any shortlist.

Poured a dark caramel color with a bit of a haze and little and quick dissipating head. Aroma and Taste are both fruity. Plums and raisins perhaps. Taste is also yeasty. Mouthfeel is good, maybe a tad thinner than expected. I was somewhat disappointed in this one, expected more.
