Commercial Description:
In November 1992 Maudite (the damned one), was the first strong beer to be distributed in Quebec grocery stores. Maudite is a mahogany-colored, rich-tasting premium beer that has a distinctive, complex taste. Because of the warmth it releases, this strong character beer must be served cool but not cold. Perfect with pasta, red meats, stews and spicy dishes, it also makes a good aperitif and after-dinner drink.
Maudite has a typically Quebecois name that is reminiscent of the legend of the Chasse-Galerie (the legend of the Flying Canoe). Legend has it that a group of lumberjacks struck a deal with the devil to fly home in their canoes, guided by Satan himself, to make it home in time for Christmas.
Gold medal winner in 1995 and 1996 and the Chicago Beverage Tasting Institute.

Pours a slightly hazy dark copper color with a frothy white head. Aroma of banana, with some cloves or allspice. In the mouth it’s pretty sweet, with some alcohol warming at the end. The spiced banana theme continues, along with more pronounced yeast flavors.

Nice milky, smooth head. Spicy, alcohol, malt aroma. Spicy flavor, not too bitter, not too sweet. Somewhat citrusy/ fruity. Good, but a little harsh metallic aftertaste.

750ml from Total Wine, Durham. Absolutely massive pour, with a full 80% of the glass foaming up initially. Nice looking mahogany body with that lasting head/retention. While this isn’t the top of Unibroue’s offerings, I do appreciate the fact that they stretch a bit here in offering something that’s a bit more piquant and fruity than some of their other brews. Slightly bitter at the start but with warming citrus and darker fruits giving a lasting finish. This is quite nice.

Bottle from The Grog Shop, Jericho, Oxford, 23-11-07 This spewed forth with a krakatoa like eruption losing me half the bottle in the process something I wasn’t best pleased about and which probably already got me off on the wrong foot with what appears to be a highly regarded beer. What I managed to get into my glass was of a muddy, murky brown appearance with quite an alcohol laden nose although this was backed up with spices and yeast. Tasted initially quite dissapointing but to give it, it’s due it got better over time and the spiciness was very apparent as was the alcohol again along with some banana lurking around and a touch of vanilla on the finish. I didn’t mind this beer but it seems a bit rough around the edges for me and not a great example of the style.

Bottle. Very sweet metallic aroma. Cloudy brownish colour. Lightning quick dissipating head. It tastes better than it looks. Lively beer, flavour is sweet with herbs and spice, vanilla even. Just not my thing.

On draft at Flatbread, Burlington. Poured rich mahogany with fizzy white head. Perfect level of carbonation that dances on the tongue. Sweet, candy flavor. Delicious.
