Commercial Description:
In November 1992 Maudite (the damned one), was the first strong beer to be distributed in Quebec grocery stores. Maudite is a mahogany-colored, rich-tasting premium beer that has a distinctive, complex taste. Because of the warmth it releases, this strong character beer must be served cool but not cold. Perfect with pasta, red meats, stews and spicy dishes, it also makes a good aperitif and after-dinner drink.
Maudite has a typically Quebecois name that is reminiscent of the legend of the Chasse-Galerie (the legend of the Flying Canoe). Legend has it that a group of lumberjacks struck a deal with the devil to fly home in their canoes, guided by Satan himself, to make it home in time for Christmas.
Gold medal winner in 1995 and 1996 and the Chicago Beverage Tasting Institute.

Bottle. Pours dark amber, swirling brown. Nice small white head. Smells of yeast and malt, taste as well. Finish points to a spice which reappears upon second taste. Good drink.

Bottle. Poured with a very large, white and foamy head that had a slight hint of brown. The is opaque amber not all that dissimilar from the color palate used on the bottle’s illustration. The aroma is crisp citrus with strong yeast noticeable too. The flavor is dry and fruity. There is a strong clove and nutmeg element. This goes down a lot smoother than I expected. This is on par with Duvel. It is smoother but lacks the complexity of Duvel in the flavor. A pretty dry finish and the ABV in noticeable too. Too bad the finish isn’t as smooth as I hoped. Overall a very, very good beer.

9/22/07 On draught at Barca, Seattle. Aroma is citrusy fruity esters forward with a faint bready malt character. Appearance is a deep hazy amber with a good off-white head. Flavor is fruity, malty but not overpowering. Mouthfeel is medium bodied with a very light grainy texture and medium carb feel. Overall, very well made and approachable.
