Commercial Description:
In November 1992 Maudite (the damned one), was the first strong beer to be distributed in Quebec grocery stores. Maudite is a mahogany-colored, rich-tasting premium beer that has a distinctive, complex taste. Because of the warmth it releases, this strong character beer must be served cool but not cold. Perfect with pasta, red meats, stews and spicy dishes, it also makes a good aperitif and after-dinner drink.
Maudite has a typically Quebecois name that is reminiscent of the legend of the Chasse-Galerie (the legend of the Flying Canoe). Legend has it that a group of lumberjacks struck a deal with the devil to fly home in their canoes, guided by Satan himself, to make it home in time for Christmas.
Gold medal winner in 1995 and 1996 and the Chicago Beverage Tasting Institute.

The beer was dark reddish brown with a large head and was heavily carbonated. It was crisp but thin and had a tart aftertaste. Overall, not a bad beer, but not one of this brewer’s best.

Very dark copper orange pour, fizzy off white head. Definitely spices, cinnamon bit of yeasty-ness, and sweetness of dried fruit. Taste of orange peel spice, over ripe bananas, slight cinnamon notes still, and caramel sweetness. Bit dry at the finish.

Pours a dark reddish brown with creamy white head. Aroma of malt, yeast, spices, fruit. Similar taste, very spicy with some acidity in the finish. Warming as well. An enjoyable heavy beer. Nice complex beer.

Pours a fizzy off-white head and a deep copper body. Smells of dough and ripe fruit. Flavor is dried fruit, cotton candy, and yeast.

A: Poured with a small, off-white head that diminished very quickly to a thin film. Dark golden-brown, with some slight haze, but come clarity as well. S: Smells highly of yeast and bready-malt... just like a good Belgian ale should. T: Starts off malty, but then ends with a dry bitterness... it’s got a real punch in its finish. M: Medium-bodied and creamy, with quite a bit of carbonation. D: I regret that I am not very familiar with this class of beer, despite all the Belgian ales I have had. I enjoy the taste, but the finish turns me off slightly. More research into Belgian strong dark ales is required.

On tap at Hop Leaf. Poured a dark brown with an off-white head. Aroma was full of spices, caramel and smoked notes. Flavor consisted of spices, caramel and an odd smoked note.

Nice rich coppery red. Min head. Smells of spices and fruit...complex for me. Great intense flavor with a smooth flavor...good value for the bucks!

A wonderful beer. Pours creamy with medium head, low lace. Aromas of spice and nuts. Attack is electric, like licking a battery, mellows to a warm caramel flavor, finish is very nice and mild. Just a touch of linger to it. A wonderful beer.
