Commercial Description:
In November 1992 Maudite (the damned one), was the first strong beer to be distributed in Quebec grocery stores. Maudite is a mahogany-colored, rich-tasting premium beer that has a distinctive, complex taste. Because of the warmth it releases, this strong character beer must be served cool but not cold. Perfect with pasta, red meats, stews and spicy dishes, it also makes a good aperitif and after-dinner drink.
Maudite has a typically Quebecois name that is reminiscent of the legend of the Chasse-Galerie (the legend of the Flying Canoe). Legend has it that a group of lumberjacks struck a deal with the devil to fly home in their canoes, guided by Satan himself, to make it home in time for Christmas.
Gold medal winner in 1995 and 1996 and the Chicago Beverage Tasting Institute.

2003 12 oz bottle. Pours a muddy brown, with some drab oranges and reds. Good beige head. Smells of alcohol, strong caramel malt, sugary phenols and some dry citrus fruits. Begins surprisingly restrained and very well balanced, lightly malty and dry, with a hint of earthiness. Unibroue yeast settles in on the medium-full body and there is a delightful flavor of currants and raisins. Good mouthfeel, lightly watery, but better as it warms.

I’ve had this beer twice before, but this is from tonights beer tasting. Had this as the first beer of the night, the semll was clearly alcoholic. The taste was big but still a bit to alcohol. Color to the amber side, at least when no pouring the yeast into the glass. When going back to this beer after having some others, the smell and taste are great, the alcohol is not present and the typical Belgian scents and falvours come out.

Pours with a nice medium amber with a tight off white head. Good lace. Aroma is yeasty and spicy with lots of fruity esters and lightly spiced. Flavor has a good amount of caramel malt, spice, yeast, bready malts, and even some cobweb like mustiness in there. Mouthfeel is medium due to the high carbonation, but finishes pretty smooth. Cant believe I hadnt rated this one before now- good thing I took notes at Cooperstown.

One of my favorites growing up in Quebec. Strong flavour and gets the whole party drunk on minimal consumption. Lovely spice and citrus flavours.

Bottle from The Grog Shop, Jericho, Oxford, 23-11-07 This spewed forth with a krakatoa like eruption losing me half the bottle in the process something I wasn’t best pleased about and which probably already got me off on the wrong foot with what appears to be a highly regarded beer. What I managed to get into my glass was of a muddy, murky brown appearance with quite an alcohol laden nose although this was backed up with spices and yeast. Tasted initially quite dissapointing but to give it, it’s due it got better over time and the spiciness was very apparent as was the alcohol again along with some banana lurking around and a touch of vanilla on the finish. I didn’t mind this beer but it seems a bit rough around the edges for me and not a great example of the style.

Bottled. Red-brown. Yeasty aroma; like dough. Sweet with notes of citrus too. Fullbodied, sweet, fruity, yeasty and really malty.

Amber/orange. Malty aroma with some dough and yeast. Flacor is malty and makes me think of marcipan. Yeasty. Had this with my good ratingfriends rickgordon (thanks for sharing the bottle) and larsniclas, and they liked it better than i did.

Amber colour with a small light brown head. Complex aroma of malts, spices and fruits. Bitter sweet taste. Good palate.
