Commercial Description:
In November 1992 Maudite (the damned one), was the first strong beer to be distributed in Quebec grocery stores. Maudite is a mahogany-colored, rich-tasting premium beer that has a distinctive, complex taste. Because of the warmth it releases, this strong character beer must be served cool but not cold. Perfect with pasta, red meats, stews and spicy dishes, it also makes a good aperitif and after-dinner drink.
Maudite has a typically Quebecois name that is reminiscent of the legend of the Chasse-Galerie (the legend of the Flying Canoe). Legend has it that a group of lumberjacks struck a deal with the devil to fly home in their canoes, guided by Satan himself, to make it home in time for Christmas.
Gold medal winner in 1995 and 1996 and the Chicago Beverage Tasting Institute.

Dark brown colored, strongly cloudy appearance. Caramel and some spices in aroma, alcohol and licorice also here. Medium to full bodied. Flavor is also dominated by licorice, mild alcohol with some spices here. Sweet sugary caramel tone also here. Aftertaste lasts with warming alcohol.

Dark sludgy brown like a westmalle dubbel, but the head was short lived. Aroma initially suggests a trappist dubbell (westmalle, again) but develops into more of a rodenbach type woody spicyness, although not sour. Bread dough in the mouth with a fruity (fig?) spicy cakelike taste. Aftertaste is delicate but leaves behind the first hint of its taste. As I work my way through the Unibroue beer range, saving the strongest for last (I have a trois pistoles and a La Fin Du Monde left) I get more and more impressed.

750ml bottle. Smaller glass. The first glass was almost golden. The second dark orange/bronze looking more like the image from Michael Jackson's book. Both had plenty of carbonation and a full, lasting bubbly head. The first one definately had warm alcohol notes and was definately smooth and Duvel like. The second glass was darker and cloudier and if the first glass was good the second was great with all the flavour imagined. Even the bottom of the bottle was great. The best part about this beer is it's lack of lasting or overpowering sweetness. In my mind a much better bevereage than Chimay Red or Blue. This is addicting. If I wasn't over .08 I would rush out and get another.

This Canadian brewery really knows how to do it right. The aroma is truly Belgian...Bananas, yeast, spice. Nice. Flavor is malty and creamy and just great. Kudos again to Unibroue.

Big yellowish beige lasting head. Brown hazy body with suspended yeast. Peppery yeasty spicy aroma with fruity notes. Sweetish spicy chalky fruity taste with peppery banana notes. Sharpish mouthfeel. Apple and licorice notes, as well as grains of paradise. Very good! (0.33l bottle, SuperValu, Dublin.)

Had this in Toronto on tap and recently in the corked bomber bottle. Fantastic rich malt flavor in this belgian style ale. Hilarious label art of the flying canoe. Reddish-brown in color. High alcohol. Grab a bottle whenever you see it and it gets better with age.

Dark brown. Aroma of malt. Flavors of malt, some dried fruit. Warming; the high abv is not noticeable in the taste, but is definitely noticeable the next morning.
