Commercial Description:
In November 1992 Maudite (the damned one), was the first strong beer to be distributed in Quebec grocery stores. Maudite is a mahogany-colored, rich-tasting premium beer that has a distinctive, complex taste. Because of the warmth it releases, this strong character beer must be served cool but not cold. Perfect with pasta, red meats, stews and spicy dishes, it also makes a good aperitif and after-dinner drink.
Maudite has a typically Quebecois name that is reminiscent of the legend of the Chasse-Galerie (the legend of the Flying Canoe). Legend has it that a group of lumberjacks struck a deal with the devil to fly home in their canoes, guided by Satan himself, to make it home in time for Christmas.
Gold medal winner in 1995 and 1996 and the Chicago Beverage Tasting Institute.

Pours a mostly clear darker orange with a small bubbled white head. Lots of citrus and dry spice in the aroma. This brew had a very nice fizzy carbonation that lightened up the palate and brought out the spices in the finish. Lots of fruity esters in the finish with some yeastiness and a dry finish and an aftertaste that I can only describe as if they made Mead Lite.

750. Pours golden brown with pink highlights in the pour stream. Enormous bubbly white head. Settles to a still rather impressive bubbly white head with some moussy character and plenty of lace. Clearly a very present beer. Big fruit sugary nose; bubblgum and dark fruit and especially raisins. All of these things come through beautifully from the attack to the finish as well. Fizzy but in a very well considered way; this is sippable and also very quenching and satisfying with food. The sweetness here adds complexity, subtlety, and reward, rather than just...sweetness. This beer is amazing.

Not my favorite Unibroue. I prefer the Pistoles, but this has a hint of hops and is a solid malty beer.

Tap. Copper pour with a big head that ended up leaving me rather quickly. The aroma a mixture of darker fruity malts and lots of yeasty spice. Much of the same in the flavor. Dark fruits like cherries, dates, plums and the like, as well as lots of spicy yeast and a little alcohol. Light lingering yeast and fruit, but it seemed rather clean really. Pleasant stuff.

(Rating #38)

Big yeasty nose. Aggressive head; hazy amber / light brown. Soft and gentle on the tongue, though a little tingly up front. Low-to-moderate carbonation, malty and sweet. A little cloying. Undeniable, and enjoyable, yeast flavors exude. Pleasant aroma – even in the burps. Well-made and distinguished.

Hazy orange amber, massive pillowing head. Sweet aroma, spices, fruit, and bready yeast. Cookie dough, banana fruit, caramel, sweet spice palate. Warming alcohol is well integrated, not harsh. Vey good.

12 oz. bottle. Hazy amber color with an orange hue. High carbonation created large off white head that dissipated in about 5 minutes. Aroma is fruity-yeasty-cherries-grapes-spice that is fairly typical of the style. Nice flavor combination of fruit (cherries or grapes), yeastiness and some spice. Smooth and balanced tasting beer.
