Commercial Description:
In November 1992 Maudite (the damned one), was the first strong beer to be distributed in Quebec grocery stores. Maudite is a mahogany-colored, rich-tasting premium beer that has a distinctive, complex taste. Because of the warmth it releases, this strong character beer must be served cool but not cold. Perfect with pasta, red meats, stews and spicy dishes, it also makes a good aperitif and after-dinner drink.
Maudite has a typically Quebecois name that is reminiscent of the legend of the Chasse-Galerie (the legend of the Flying Canoe). Legend has it that a group of lumberjacks struck a deal with the devil to fly home in their canoes, guided by Satan himself, to make it home in time for Christmas.
Gold medal winner in 1995 and 1996 and the Chicago Beverage Tasting Institute.

Fantastic beer on all accounts: l discover new flavors and smells each time I open a bottle. Other raters have flushed out all the necessary details about the beer’s yeasty, slightly sweet, yet complex character. Delightful appearance too.

Do not get me wrong I enjoyed drinking this, but I have to admit I was expecting more and was somewhat disappointed. Pours a really nice cloudy, hazy off color orange, with a small ring of froth around the edges. This is definitely one to let warm up before you drink it, otherwise you will get nothing out of it. Has a slightly wet, doughy, wet cardboard taste if you do not. Otherwise, lots of cherries and plums, very doughy, with some hints of ginger and cinamon in the aftertaste. Slightly sweet but not enough to be annoying. A very calming beer, that is nice to sit out on the patio and relax with.

A little lighter tasting than it looks. It avoids the overwhelming heavy malty sweetness in that is in other Belgian Ales.

12oz. Bottle: Very sweet aroma. Smells of ripe dark fruits, and a little cinnamon, clove, and nutmeg. Poured copper/amber in color with a big off-white head that lasted throughout. Excellent lacing. Cloudy. Lots of floating particles. Very sparkling. Flavor is moderately sweet but not bitter or sour. Tastes of plum, prune, clove, nutmeg, and cinnamon. Full body. Fizzy carbonation. Dry, alcohol finish.

Very nice, but not outstanding. Pours a hazy red/copper, surprisingly large carbonation bubbles (could have been the effect of my glass, though) and a bit of yeast at the bottom. Nice, drinkable flavors, but slightly weak (compare Victory V10, which is at the opposite end of the flavor intensity spectrum), yeasty, fruity, slightly sweet. Goes down shockingly fast.

750 ml bottle; Nose of caramel, cloves, and some fruitiness; transparent light brown with a small tan head; caramel flavor with spices, (cloves especially), and a little banana; light alcohol and spice finish.

The flavor and aroma of this beer are very similar to Victory Golden Monkey. I realize that they are the same style of beer, but I’ve had other belgian strongs, and these two beers are like brothers. However, unlike Golden Monkey, the fruit and spice flavor isn’t as noticable or enjoyable. If you have the choice, buy the monkey.

33 cl Bottle. Brown to orange in colour, very good aroma, but nothing speciel in flavor. Too much alkoholic in aftertaste.
