Commercial Description:
In November 1992 Maudite (the damned one), was the first strong beer to be distributed in Quebec grocery stores. Maudite is a mahogany-colored, rich-tasting premium beer that has a distinctive, complex taste. Because of the warmth it releases, this strong character beer must be served cool but not cold. Perfect with pasta, red meats, stews and spicy dishes, it also makes a good aperitif and after-dinner drink.
Maudite has a typically Quebecois name that is reminiscent of the legend of the Chasse-Galerie (the legend of the Flying Canoe). Legend has it that a group of lumberjacks struck a deal with the devil to fly home in their canoes, guided by Satan himself, to make it home in time for Christmas.
Gold medal winner in 1995 and 1996 and the Chicago Beverage Tasting Institute.

Had a grainy aroma to this one. Body was caramel color with decent off white head that disipated. Flavor was of sweet fruit like a fruit cocktail from a jar with some alcohol flavor. Dry sweet sticky aftertaste but overall a decent beer.

Pours great, tastes great. If the ’damned’ were to truly drink this beer, i’d be envious. excellent medium flavor, but leaves a strange sticky feeling at the back of the tongue, it’s only downside.

Sweet, fruity nose (figs?) that is kinda bread-like at times. Nice ruby-amber color and a low fizzy head with lace. Subtle toffee-ish tones are an interesting taste component. Accents of cinnamon and a quick peppery finish. Very full body and fairly complex. A good stand-alone beer - good in the evening maybe after dinner.

Rich hazy amber/light brown colour with a short lived off-white head. Aroma of cider, nutmeg, alcohol, malt and a slight anise hint. Full-bodied; Super carbonated mouthful; Sweet raisin and plum flavour initially masked by an alcoholic kick and a bitter yeastie twang. Aftertaste shows some spice, but mostly alcohol. A decent beer altogether, but not as good (in my opinion) as it is made out to be. I bought this twelve ounce bottle at Beers of the World in Rochester, New York and sampled it on 13-December-2003.

Orange-ruby colour with a creamy white head. Aroma of the ubiquitous Unibroue yeast with strong spice and fruit notes. Sweet, complex flavour with some hints of apple, nutmeg, raisin and peach. Finish is smooth and moderately dry. A Canadian classic.

12 oz bottle pours murky brown with a creamy tan head that laces very well. Aroma of yeast, some alcohol, plums, and raisins. Flavor is of plum, a bit of black cherry, some yeast. Very sweet. Palate is silky smooth, airy, and quite pleasant mouthfeel. The 9% alcohol is very well covered Only a touch available in the aroma. None in the flavor. Not a bad sipper.. Pretty good for a nightcap

A powerful spicy fruity ale with a peachy alcohol aroma. I had a 12oz bottle and can't wait to try a bigger one. 12-29-01: I'm sipping a 25.4 oz and I don't remember rating the 12oz bottle of this. After checking the bottle pile, yes I had it before. I'm knocking the palate to a 5. Great beer, way to keep them Belgians working! Like Chimay, but more offerings at half the price.

12 oz bottle. Pours a chestnut brown with a thin fizzy white head that dwindles to a thin film quickly. Aroma is of typical belgian yeast, alcohol, dark fruits, sweetness. Flavor is dominated by Unibroue yeast, cloying sweetness, ripe dark fruits, raisin. Mouthfeel is medium body, fizzy with a long sweet mouth coating malty finish. Alcohol makes its itself know in the lingering finish. Not bad stuff, major downfall for me is the fizzy mouthfeel that hides the flavor from the tongue. Not my favorite from Unibroue but drinkable and worth a try.
