Commercial Description:
In November 1992 Maudite (the damned one), was the first strong beer to be distributed in Quebec grocery stores. Maudite is a mahogany-colored, rich-tasting premium beer that has a distinctive, complex taste. Because of the warmth it releases, this strong character beer must be served cool but not cold. Perfect with pasta, red meats, stews and spicy dishes, it also makes a good aperitif and after-dinner drink.
Maudite has a typically Quebecois name that is reminiscent of the legend of the Chasse-Galerie (the legend of the Flying Canoe). Legend has it that a group of lumberjacks struck a deal with the devil to fly home in their canoes, guided by Satan himself, to make it home in time for Christmas.
Gold medal winner in 1995 and 1996 and the Chicago Beverage Tasting Institute.

750 mL bottle. Pours amber colored with effervescence in the head and the body. Faint aroma of malt with even fainter hops in the background. Not much hops in the taste, but an excellent maltiness, with flavors of cinnamon and lemon. Mmm.

re-rate 4/30/02. Had to lower the score. I really have a little trouble with the taste of the yeast. The color is nice. Medium dark reddish brown and cloudy. The head is a bit foamy and dissapates quickly. It has a mild pleasant smell. The flavor lacks some of the complexity that I would expect from a Belgian style brew, but the more I drank, the more I liked it. The alcohol only leaves the slightest footprint on the tongue -- just enough to let you know it’s there. Overall, a good beer.

This was the first one of their products I saw, and their best. Yeasty lightly spiced nose.Sweet foretaste with nutmeg and a touch of honey, and a medium alcohol heat.

Poured golden brown with a medium, bubbly head. Started with a sharper fizziness that mellowed later. Fruits tasted were grape and cherry in the malts and some citrus/orange peel and spiceyness/corriander. A nice hop contributed dryness and balance. This is devillishly good. (My 666th rating on Friday the 13. 12/13/2002)

Great ruby brown color and a nice malty, yeasty, spicy aroma. The flavor was fairly sweet and there was no presence of hops. Impressive Belgian style brew from Quebec, I couldn’t distinguish it from the Belgian Strong Ales I’ve had. Alcohol was well hidden and the flavor was spicey. Head was solid and sustained itself throughout.

Bottle - Poured a ruby colored brew with nice huge head with great retention. Carbonation is good and aroma of malts and hops are well balanced. Taste is a right mix of sweetness and spice. Aftertaste has the usual creamy Unibroue feeling with a subtle bitterness. The ABV is so subtle and to me is one of the great quality of this great beer. Probably one of the best Belgian beer brewed outside of Belgium and one of the best from Unibroue.

On tap at Pizza Port. Golden copper with a fizzy white head. Fruity and yeasty aroma. Thick silky palate. Sweet taste of apple, pear, some spicy notes and a smooth finish.
