The aroma is fruity and suggests sweetness. The flavor, as the aroma suggests, is sweet and citrusy. It’s also nicely spiced and though quite sweet, fairly well balanced too. The 8% alcohol is well masked. Some mild hops come through in the finish and the alcohol is pleasantly warming. This is another excellent ale from Unibroue. It’s my 3rd Unibroue ale and I really must track down more of their brews. I don’t think you can go wrong with them. What a great brewery! SHIG (2050), Aviano, Italy

Taste is dark fruits with some spice. Finish is dry and very close to a Belgium made strong ale. cheapdark (2050), Monacatootha, Pennsylvania, USA

Nice big creamy off white head. Stronger ale aroma, sweet and hefty. Mild carbonation on the palate. Nice taste, very little detectable bitterness initially but throughout the session that bitterness does build on the back of the palate. You would not know this is 8% by the taste, it is well hidden. The taste sensations of this brew are well mannered and controlled. Restrained unique flavors. Has a somewhat earthy hint within. Finish is not too objectionable for a high alky brew. Rather smooth and enjoyable. The finish ends up with a medium alky bite that hangs for a while on the back of the throat. One of the better strong Belgies I’ve tasted. Even better than Maredsous 8. Rich brown muddy color with a flowery malt nose and complex malty yeasty flavor. Smooth on the tongue with alcohol and sweetness in the finish. Another well made Unibroue product. | 4.1 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 5/5 | 8/10 | 4/5 | 17/20 | Jul 17, 2006 Updated: Aug 27, 2007I have had this beer a number of times but generally tend to pass it over for the Trois Pistoles. Sampled from a 12 oz brown bottle this beer poured a dark chestnut color with a medium sized tan head. The aroma is tangy sour fruits, light spice and the typical yeasty and bready undertone that is found in most Unibroue products. The mouthfeel is moderately thick and chewy. The Flavor is tangy ripe fruits, a light hint of molasses and light spice. Again there is the yeasty and bready notes. Ripe fruits linger on the finish. The beer is dryer than one would expect. | 3.8 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 4/5 | 8/10 | 4/5 | 15/20 | Nov 1, 2007 Damn tasty beer! From a small bottle--Poured a deep amber-brown-mahogany body with a creamy merangue off-whtie head. Big lacing. Spicy and chewy notes with a dry and balanced finish. Belgian yeast prevalent as well as a variety of spices. Great with chocolate and frut dishes. Complex and well-rounded. bitbucket (2036), Kirkland, Washington, USA

Medium body and powerful carbonation. Creamy taste of spiced fruit with a clean, dry finish. Indra (2036), Prairie Village, Kansas, USA
| 4.1 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 8/10 | 4/5 | 8/10 | 4/5 | 17/20 | Dec 11, 2002 Updated: Jan 24, 2003Incredibly appetizing fruity, musty, yeasty aroma. Tap version shows some even more pronounced banana and spice. Opaque medium red-brown color with some sedimentation and robust frothy head. Carbonation is quite suiting, just lightly bubbly and creamy. Initial taste is intensely fruity maltiness, followed by a slightly tart/spicy and fruity, yeasty aftertaste. Hops are somewhat subdued, leaving the malt blend to dominate. This is by no means a bad thing, the malt flavors are very nice and offer some complexity. Just a solid Belgian style beer.
