Commercial Description:
In November 1992 Maudite (the damned one), was the first strong beer to be distributed in Quebec grocery stores. Maudite is a mahogany-colored, rich-tasting premium beer that has a distinctive, complex taste. Because of the warmth it releases, this strong character beer must be served cool but not cold. Perfect with pasta, red meats, stews and spicy dishes, it also makes a good aperitif and after-dinner drink.
Maudite has a typically Quebecois name that is reminiscent of the legend of the Chasse-Galerie (the legend of the Flying Canoe). Legend has it that a group of lumberjacks struck a deal with the devil to fly home in their canoes, guided by Satan himself, to make it home in time for Christmas.
Gold medal winner in 1995 and 1996 and the Chicago Beverage Tasting Institute.

Had the pleasure of drinking quite a few of these in Quebéc. 12 ounce bottle. Dark amber colour with a nice thick head. Aroma is fruity and sweet with some prune and indeed a good touch of alcohol. Spicy flavor, strong malty, fruity and sweet. Long aftertaste. Leaves a nice warming feeling in the belly....wanting you to get you own canoe and just raft the skies looking for more of this wonderful brew not caring if you too become maudite.............. Darn good brew!

Bought in Brouwerij De Schans. Orange color, cloudy. Fresh malt and orange aroma. Sweetish flavor with orange, malt and a hint of sourness. Peach and a hint of licorice. Some alcohol. Lovely fruity flavor. Easy to drink, but the alcohol is everpresent. Good beer, easily to be confused with one of the better Belgian strong ales.

A Sim Rate (bottled from Quinn’s): Aroma is so complex. Obvious orange and icing sugar. Smells just like those oranges you prod with cloves at christmas. i can certainly smell morello cherries in there. Flavour is similar, slightly bitter at first but followed promptly by cherries. Almost fake cherries like Vicks Cough Drops. Murky brown looks.

Hazy nut-brown colour with thin creamy off-white head. Aroma of bitter berries, some orange and a lot of spice. Quite spritzy mouthfeel. Taste is initially sweet then gains momentum with spicyness, some apples and a slightly bitter finish. Quite vinious as well.

Poured a murky, reddish-brown with a large tan head. Aromas of plums, raisins, malts and hops. Lively carbonation and sweet with a light bitter kick. Tastes of raisins and plums. Alcohol content well hidden.

From the 750ml bottle (which seemed a little more stable) Amber/Copper color. Herbal nose of yeasts. It simply tastes good: cloves, pepper, yeasts, hops, malt, fruits and what not. I couldn't find any component taking the top in this delicious rumble that develops a small, but pleasant bitterness as it, not without regrets, leave your throat.
