Commercial Description:
In November 1992 Maudite (the damned one), was the first strong beer to be distributed in Quebec grocery stores. Maudite is a mahogany-colored, rich-tasting premium beer that has a distinctive, complex taste. Because of the warmth it releases, this strong character beer must be served cool but not cold. Perfect with pasta, red meats, stews and spicy dishes, it also makes a good aperitif and after-dinner drink.
Maudite has a typically Quebecois name that is reminiscent of the legend of the Chasse-Galerie (the legend of the Flying Canoe). Legend has it that a group of lumberjacks struck a deal with the devil to fly home in their canoes, guided by Satan himself, to make it home in time for Christmas.
Gold medal winner in 1995 and 1996 and the Chicago Beverage Tasting Institute.

750ml from Total Wine, Durham. Absolutely massive pour, with a full 80% of the glass foaming up initially. Nice looking mahogany body with that lasting head/retention. While this isn’t the top of Unibroue’s offerings, I do appreciate the fact that they stretch a bit here in offering something that’s a bit more piquant and fruity than some of their other brews. Slightly bitter at the start but with warming citrus and darker fruits giving a lasting finish. This is quite nice.

Reddish brown, hazy colour. Medium head. Somewhat yeasty aroma with a little bit of toffee and citrus. Sweet and warming flavour. A pleasant but not outstanding beer.

12 ounce bottle. Pours hazy, copper/red. Kind of a dirty snow looking hest that demishesto a whisping across the top. Over run by alcohol. Some sweet candy sugar notes. Starts ou sweet over the tounge, and finishes dry and very alcoholic. Probalby needs more time in the bottle. Tons of carbonation. Adds to the harshness.

355ml bottle. Best before 09/10/05, enjoyed on 11/19/05 (Whoops, I guess this is past its prime!) Pours cloudy amber with lots of yeasty particles and a thick white head that fades to a cover. Nice lacing. The aroma is bananas, green grape juice and yeasty spiciness. The flavor is a beautiful blend of sweet fruits: green grapes, apple, candi sugar and a touch of orange at the end. The finish is long with a nice tongue tingle. The mouthfeel is very champagnelike and elegant. I must say this brew has aged like a champ.

God, someone else said it before me. The aroma smells a little of vomit. That being said, I like this beer. A soda type head, dissipates somewhat quickly. Lively mouthfeel. Sweetish taste with a very mild hop finish. I seemed to like this better than the Pistoles, but the vomit aroma was interesting.

Bottle. Says best before March 2009, so I’m guessing it’s a few years old. Pours unclear orange/brown with a beige head. Sweet malt aroma, with fruit, caramel, yeast and nutmeg. Soft, medium body, quite a bit of carbonation. Flavor is again sweet. Ir has a lot going on but it’s very well balanced. Fruity, yeasty, and spicy. Notes of apple, peach, caramel, clove, chestnut, and floral hops. Short, dry finish, with a touch of yeast and a very slight bitterness. Very nice. Very drinkable and very tasty.
