Commercial Description:
In November 1992 Maudite (the damned one), was the first strong beer to be distributed in Quebec grocery stores. Maudite is a mahogany-colored, rich-tasting premium beer that has a distinctive, complex taste. Because of the warmth it releases, this strong character beer must be served cool but not cold. Perfect with pasta, red meats, stews and spicy dishes, it also makes a good aperitif and after-dinner drink.
Maudite has a typically Quebecois name that is reminiscent of the legend of the Chasse-Galerie (the legend of the Flying Canoe). Legend has it that a group of lumberjacks struck a deal with the devil to fly home in their canoes, guided by Satan himself, to make it home in time for Christmas.
Gold medal winner in 1995 and 1996 and the Chicago Beverage Tasting Institute.

Beautiful brown body with a fluffy head. Aroma is malty, sweet, belgian sugar, plums, spice and yeast. Fruity, banana and cloves too. Flavor is sweet with mellow spice, banana, plum and brown sugar. This is on draft, have had many times in a bottle but this is just awesome. So smooth and delicious.

Ruby red pour with a soapy head that starts big but quickly diminishes. All kinds of spice in the aroma. Well carbonated over the tongue, easy drinking. No hint of alcohol. Very good stuff.

330ml bottle, Quinns, 12th August 2007 (with Mes and Sim). Pours a cloudy brown with a sweet, toffee aroma. Flavour-wise, it’s sweet - a mix of caramel, warm alcohol and spicy apples. However, the palate is full first but then dissolves into a watery finish. Overall, I felt this was a beer that promised a lot, but ultimately does not deliver, when compared to the likes of Trois Pistoles, Westvleteren or St. Bernardus.

Rating update, 4/28. Tap @ Andy's. Mkobes gave me a good sample of hers. Big Maudite snifter. Nice fruity aroma. Flavor is an the sweet side, and malty. Better than the bottle that I had, so I have upped my rating slightly. Cloudy orange color. Pleasant, fruity aroma, with notes of raisin, and other mixed dried fruit. Thin body, pleasant fruity flavor. Notes of carmel. Overall not bad, but have had better for the style.

Oh yeah...it smells absolutly amazing, I just loved the sweet spicyness, lets see, theres some fruity sweets of orange peels, some nutmeg, ginger, clove, belgian-like yeast, and heck though in some roasted peppers. Then the taste is super rich and creamy smooth with lots of spicy action and tingly sweetness with a great roasty caramel malt backing thats very bold and smooth. The spice is peppery and fruity. Its got alot of things happening in the taste and feel, its just great to sip and ponder what the hecks all in this thing. The feel is medium heavy bodied, solid, silky smooth and a little bit creamy, that starts sweet, citrusy and malty then goes into the spice level and fades nicely into a fresh and drying bitter hop. Nothing here is overwhelming or overpowering, its all balanced in so softly its hard to phathom.

Pours a medium brown with an off white head of tiny bubbles. Aroma is nutmeg and yeast. Faint spices. Flavors are clove and spice. It is very earthy and has just a bit of fruit flavor. Pepper spice that zings the tongue. The zing builds as it warms. Moderate alcohol taste and warming. Another nice beer by Unibroue.

Dark pour. Belgian aroma with a weightier feel. Dry mouthfeel, little aftertaste. Flavor up front is bitter. No sweetness which I expected. Re-rate 8/26/09. Pours heavy red with a murky appearance. Smell has a nice round of spice with a quick punch of heavy flavors. Mouthfeel boasts an immediate tingle which is cheerfully provided by the ABV. Taste is better than I remembered however I was but a tot when I tried it the first time. Slight improvement.
