Commercial Description:
In November 1992 Maudite (the damned one), was the first strong beer to be distributed in Quebec grocery stores. Maudite is a mahogany-colored, rich-tasting premium beer that has a distinctive, complex taste. Because of the warmth it releases, this strong character beer must be served cool but not cold. Perfect with pasta, red meats, stews and spicy dishes, it also makes a good aperitif and after-dinner drink.
Maudite has a typically Quebecois name that is reminiscent of the legend of the Chasse-Galerie (the legend of the Flying Canoe). Legend has it that a group of lumberjacks struck a deal with the devil to fly home in their canoes, guided by Satan himself, to make it home in time for Christmas.
Gold medal winner in 1995 and 1996 and the Chicago Beverage Tasting Institute.

Bottle poured dark caramel with huge long lasting head and spotty lacing. Weak aroma of spice, bread. Flavor is yeasty ,bread with an alcoholic bite on the finish.

Explosive, foamy expansive head. Soon settled to a thin bubbly head over a ruby colored liquid Hints of cherries, yeast and a very subtle hoppy aroma. The first sip gave off a chewy, yet airy, caramel taste with a slight hint of coriander. After that there was a vinous nuttiness followed by fruity tones - pears and apples sprang to mind first. The alcoholic content was masked well. This was enjoyable but it seemed to lack the follow through of other Belgian style ales. Still, an excellent choice.

Cloudy light copper with a white head. Body of the beer looks almost like a hard cider. Nose more of fruit than of beer. Taste is banana, yeast, melon; the apples that I remembered from an earlier tasting are no longer there. Finish with a little hop, a little pepper, a little clove. I have to assume this is a wheat beer, but it is more in the style of an Aventinus then a Belgian, and I love it. More my style than the more Belgian Fin du Monde from Unibroue. A little bit bubbly, pleasant but less mouth filling as a result. Great beer.

Dark mahogany pour and creamy off white head. Tastes of creamy summer fruits. Good, but too fruity/sweet for me.

Light brown in color with a small tan head. Aroma of sweet malt, dark fruit and spices(nutmeg and coriander?). Flavor is slightly sweet malt with hints of raisins, coriander and a warming alcoholic finish. Another solid brew from Unibroue.

Very smooth and well-rounded, with delicately warming spiciness rather like Chimay White (nutmeg, porridge, toast - sounds like a good breakfast hey?). Well-constructed and wholesome, but a bit on the bland side.... But not bad at all.
