Commercial Description:
In November 1992 Maudite (the damned one), was the first strong beer to be distributed in Quebec grocery stores. Maudite is a mahogany-colored, rich-tasting premium beer that has a distinctive, complex taste. Because of the warmth it releases, this strong character beer must be served cool but not cold. Perfect with pasta, red meats, stews and spicy dishes, it also makes a good aperitif and after-dinner drink.
Maudite has a typically Quebecois name that is reminiscent of the legend of the Chasse-Galerie (the legend of the Flying Canoe). Legend has it that a group of lumberjacks struck a deal with the devil to fly home in their canoes, guided by Satan himself, to make it home in time for Christmas.
Gold medal winner in 1995 and 1996 and the Chicago Beverage Tasting Institute.

Copper with a medium, creamy head. A strong grapefruit/orange aroma with spices. Sweet, complex flavour with a lot of caramel and other burned notes, and a spicy, pepper and licorice finish.

Number 1001...a 1.5 yr old Maudite from Loblaws in LaSalle. Hazy brown ale with a sweet funky aroma of yeast, plums and alcohol. In mouth, wow, always the classic! Sweet malt with prunes and alcohol warmth, some vanilla notes and a smooth finish, no edges! Very stylish....Vive la Maudite!

Head is initially large, frothy, off-white, fully lasting. Body is hazy medium amber, bottle conditioned. Aroma is moderately hoppy (flowers, lemon, herbs), moderately yeasty (cobwebs), moderately malty (cookie), with notes of orange, clove, pear, coriander, banana, and alcohol. Flavor is heavily sweet, moderately acidic. Finish is moderately sweet, lightly acidic, lightly bitter, short. Medium body, watery/velvety texture, lively carbonation, lightly alcoholic. As with my previous ratings of this (I keep wanting to like this more due to the aroma), the finish is rather abrupt and the flavor and mouthfeel too simple/sweet/watery. The aroma and appearance are definitely lovely, but it’s just not that much fun to drink.

Another worthy product from our friends to the North; at first I was a bit apprehensive of the cloudiness in my glass, which seemed a bit much even for a bottle-conditioned strong ale; the spicy nose is not overwhelming, but very nice. Flavor is explosive, rich, sweet -- whoever called it a weizenbock I think nailed it; bit too alcoholic on the palate for me. Still, a great beer, whatever style you want to put on it.

Aroma of malt and citrus and clove spice. Deep amber color with a fantastic white head. Starts with spicy sweetness. Substantial mouthfeel. Clove seems to be in the finish. Any hop is lost in the malt and spice. However, there does seem to be a bitter effect on the sides of the tongue.

Caramel fruit and sugar sweet aroma. Hazy burnt orange colour with thick white head that recedes to a film. Sweet round full flavour with dark fruits and caramel maltiness. Alcohol makes a brief appearance but is hidden wonderfully in the huge palate of this wonderful beer. Residual and lasting sweetness. Bottle.
