Commercial Description:
In November 1992 Maudite (the damned one), was the first strong beer to be distributed in Quebec grocery stores. Maudite is a mahogany-colored, rich-tasting premium beer that has a distinctive, complex taste. Because of the warmth it releases, this strong character beer must be served cool but not cold. Perfect with pasta, red meats, stews and spicy dishes, it also makes a good aperitif and after-dinner drink.
Maudite has a typically Quebecois name that is reminiscent of the legend of the Chasse-Galerie (the legend of the Flying Canoe). Legend has it that a group of lumberjacks struck a deal with the devil to fly home in their canoes, guided by Satan himself, to make it home in time for Christmas.
Gold medal winner in 1995 and 1996 and the Chicago Beverage Tasting Institute.

Caramel fruit and sugar sweet aroma. Hazy burnt orange colour with thick white head that recedes to a film. Sweet round full flavour with dark fruits and caramel maltiness. Alcohol makes a brief appearance but is hidden wonderfully in the huge palate of this wonderful beer. Residual and lasting sweetness. Bottle.

On tap at the Hop Leaf Chicago - Golden color with a small creamy head, fair lacing, full-bodied. Very nice aroma with hints of cereal, pine, yeast, honey, and raisin. Somewhat vinous. Flavor matched the aroma, creamy and buttery. Light alcohol presence detected on the finish. Good stuff, recommmended.

April, 2004 Bottle Conditioned with its own glass at The Green Parrot, Honfleur, Normandy. Hazy dull copper raspberry colour with no head. A rather flat and muddy aroma with a hint of vomit. Soft mouse mouthfeel. Cedar wood flavour, though the softy fizzy carbonation disturbs everything. Dry finish with some dark spices. Interesting and decent quality, though it doesn’t rock my boat. However, at this moment, at this bar, with 60 different beers, I feel, perhaps, a little too happy. [2.8]
June, 2006 Heavy carbonation. Yeast. Lactic acid. Alcohol. Dryness. Cloves. Spicy fruit cake and licorice. A strong wheat (?) beer of some character - though wheat is not normally a cereal I enjoy in beer. Sweetness balances some wheat sharpness. [2.9]
Nov, 2006 Looks like mucky pond water with tadpole scum on top. This is not a pretty drink. Dark malts add chocolate notes, but there is also a lot of sugar. A bit of molasses and a bit of treacle. A bit of yeast. Slightly dirty and vaguely woody. Vague clash of flavours in the finish. The dark sweetness is both attractive and off-putting. Not impressed. [2.8]

Bottle. Opened it with the result that the cork exploted into my ceiling. High Fluffy white but relatively quickly disappearing head. Hary dark orange body. Complex caramel hops alcohol aroma with some kind of spices. Strangely sour caramel berries flavor with a good deal of carbonation.

Sampled during Cellar’s Wine & Spirits Wednesday evening tasting via Unibroue representative. Pours a hazy dark brown amber brew with a fast dissolving off-white head. Aroma of roasted caramel malt, some roasted nuts, yeast and dried dark fruits. Taste is medium bodied, with flavors of multi-grain malt, some extra yeast, dark fruits and a touch of spice. Finish is semi-dry with a malty grain aftertaste that has a second finish of tart berries and yeast. A multi-personality Belgian Ale best describes this beer.

Poured a mostly clear deep amber color with a large fluffy off white head and effervescent body. Sweet malty aroma with notes of apricot, spice, yeast, sugar, coriander, and alcohol. Sweet malty flavors with caramel, crisp apple, and spicy but clean finish. Well hidden alcohol in flavor. Complex and medium bodied.

750 ml bottle, 2004. Poured a clear copper with a light off-white head. Heavy fruity malts in the aroma with mild funky yeast, alcohol, and vinous notes. Heavier on the vinous in the flavor, with some added caramel and floral hoppage. Caramel and fruity maltage pick up steam as this warms. Too much carbonation drives the flavor across the palate too quickly. Pears, grapes, other assorted malts provide a very nice finish. This could have been great, but the high carbonation didn’t do it justice.
