Commercial Description:
In November 1992 Maudite (the damned one), was the first strong beer to be distributed in Quebec grocery stores. Maudite is a mahogany-colored, rich-tasting premium beer that has a distinctive, complex taste. Because of the warmth it releases, this strong character beer must be served cool but not cold. Perfect with pasta, red meats, stews and spicy dishes, it also makes a good aperitif and after-dinner drink.
Maudite has a typically Quebecois name that is reminiscent of the legend of the Chasse-Galerie (the legend of the Flying Canoe). Legend has it that a group of lumberjacks struck a deal with the devil to fly home in their canoes, guided by Satan himself, to make it home in time for Christmas.
Gold medal winner in 1995 and 1996 and the Chicago Beverage Tasting Institute.

Bottle as shown. Pours a cloudy tan amber color with a small off white head that diminishes quickly to a paperthin head. The aroma was a very sweet malt with hints of spice. The taste is what really got me; very fruity with a smooth aftertaste. This is one of my favorites from Unibroue. Anyone that like belgian strong ales has to try this.

I tried this beer on August 30, 2007 at the ’Beer Bistro’ in Toronto. The beer was dark brown with a smallish white head. The aroma was a combination of malt and spice, possibly cloves. The mouthfeel was medium-bodied with some mild carbonation. The flavour was smooth and spicy with some malty hints.

Simply amazing! Poured an amber color with a slightly orange hue. Lots of tiny bubbles exploding from the clear body. Head is made up of millions of bubbles, but has a smooth, creamy texture. Aroma is packed! Extremely well-balanced between sweet malts, caramel, citrus, and alcohol. Taste is very similar. This beer is very similar to a Belgian tripel, but balanced equally with a nice malty richness. Palate is lively and smooth, but has a bit of a short finish. Overall, a tremendous beer! To date, a top 5 in my opinion!

Sweet, but a little spicy. Complex and well balanced. Is dark brown with a subtle sweet aroma and beautiful finish. This is what I would like to be served in a log cabin.

750mL bottle - pours a dark amber into chalice. Full body from start to finish, with a great spice, roasted malt, clove and yeast. A fantastic Belgian Strong from Unibroue.

Another fantastic Unibroue beer. This is probably my favorite of the Unibroue’s because of the wonderful mouthfeel and pleasant palate that comes after every sip. The 8% alcohol is an added treat in that you get a very "heady" buzz after 1 or 2 beers. One of my top 5!

On tap at Mile Square in Hoboken. I was iffy about this beer to begin with, not because i had heard anything bad about it, but because i typically don’t like Canadian beer. This is completely different though. It has the sweetness i love, while being really well-balanced too. If you can get this, try it. I’m pretty sure that you’ll love it.

Draft at Oldsmar Tap House. Excellent strong ale and surprised this is not Belgian. Flavors are a perfect balance of spice, clove, and apricot. Strength is just right. Pours brown-orange with a nice head.
