Commercial Description:
In November 1992 Maudite (the damned one), was the first strong beer to be distributed in Quebec grocery stores. Maudite is a mahogany-colored, rich-tasting premium beer that has a distinctive, complex taste. Because of the warmth it releases, this strong character beer must be served cool but not cold. Perfect with pasta, red meats, stews and spicy dishes, it also makes a good aperitif and after-dinner drink.
Maudite has a typically Quebecois name that is reminiscent of the legend of the Chasse-Galerie (the legend of the Flying Canoe). Legend has it that a group of lumberjacks struck a deal with the devil to fly home in their canoes, guided by Satan himself, to make it home in time for Christmas.
Gold medal winner in 1995 and 1996 and the Chicago Beverage Tasting Institute.

Incredibly appetizing fruity, musty, yeasty aroma. Tap version shows some even more pronounced banana and spice. Opaque medium red-brown color with some sedimentation and robust frothy head. Carbonation is quite suiting, just lightly bubbly and creamy. Initial taste is intensely fruity maltiness, followed by a slightly tart/spicy and fruity, yeasty aftertaste. Hops are somewhat subdued, leaving the malt blend to dominate. This is by no means a bad thing, the malt flavors are very nice and offer some complexity. Just a solid Belgian style beer.

A powerful spicy fruity ale with a peachy alcohol aroma. I had a 12oz bottle and can't wait to try a bigger one. 12-29-01: I'm sipping a 25.4 oz and I don't remember rating the 12oz bottle of this. After checking the bottle pile, yes I had it before. I'm knocking the palate to a 5. Great beer, way to keep them Belgians working! Like Chimay, but more offerings at half the price.

Re-rate 9/5/02 Glad i had this again. Incredibly smooth and spicy with some nice fruit and maybe even a bit of bubblegum? flavor. A real winner. Unibroue scores again! A great beer.

Big spritzy head,cloudy amber/brown colour, yeasty aroma, sweet malty taste, almost like honey. Spicey after tatse. Love it Marry it!!!!

Slight banana aroma in the head---pour into bell-shaped glass to get better aroma. Unfiltered amber color, okay head when poured but doesn't "lace" much, if at all. Tastes spicey with slight sweetness. Some apple? Very nice.

Another ridiculously rich and complex ale from the geniuses at Unibroue. Very spicy. Orange/gold, with a copious Belgian-style head.

This is a great Belgian style ale. Big and matly with nice caramel flavours as it warms. Looks good too. However, it’s probably a little <EM>too</EM> smooth on the palete - I like a little more of a challenge on the way down with this type of beer. On the other hand it could be said that it is an ’easy drinking’ type of Belgian strong. Having said that the alcohol flavour comes through in spades... I love this beer but it could be better.
