lithy (1600), Knoxville, Tennessee, USA Mar 20, 2009 Dark brown with a thin light tan creamy foam. Aroma is some dark sweet malts, some spice and a surprising citrus. Taste is more oranges, lemons, some darker plums and brown sugar then a nutmeg or cinnamon spice finish. suchen (81), , Pennsylvania, USA Mar 19, 2009 Pour was beautiful for a strong ale. Enticingly dark and mysterious with a medium head that doesn’t last. The aroma is rather dry as is the flavor, with the yeast dominating and complex fruity notes playing their parts as well. I am not a wine-lover, so there was not much in the dry and somewhat tart/bitter thing this beer had going. Very interesting dark Belgian though. GardenGabe (125), Denver, Colorado, USA Mar 17, 2009 Pour is rich brown some red. Creamy quick settling head. Smells of molasses cookies. Rich liquorish flavor nice malt and hop balance. Great Beer. meeple (52), Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada Mar 16, 2009 Bottle. Deep brown, small beige head. Caramel, brown sugar, chocolate, clove nose. Sugary sweet, lacking some of the complexity of other Unibroues, sour yeast finish. Overall not my favorite.
malrubius (969), Valley Stream, New York, USA Mar 11, 2009 750 ml bottle in Chimay glass. Reddish brown with flat head. (Anyone ever experience any lacing with this beer?) Toasted caramel dark fruit port woody yeast aroma. Fruity woody caramel with tobacco bitterness. Medium body and decent mouthfeel. Lingering mouthcoateing woodiness. Pretty good but slightly overrated IMHO. Could use more body and creamier fuller texture. . scrizzz (1252), kirkland, Washington, USA Mar 10, 2009 Dark black malt aroma and sherry soaked fir. Very dark ruby color, slippery white head. Very much dark malt forward, some dusty chocolate and squishy ripe plum. Quickly warm with alcohol, somewhat light in body. Sampling Notes:
Served chilled in chalice glass.
Pours an attractive murky black body with a small dense tan head.
Unique and pungent sort of aroma, somewhat hoppy with notes of citrus, young red wine aromatics of tart blackberry, unripe plum, prune and blueberry.
Smooth, velvet-like texture, low carbonation, somewhat well-attentuated body making it deceptively strong.
Suprisingly smooth fruit-driven body for such a dark beer. Hint of dark chocolate and brown sugar at beginning move onto notes of prune, fig, apricot, blackberry, dried fruits and bitter orange lingering. Bitterness is quite high, finishes with drying spice and subtle drying alcohol warmth.
Certainly a unique Belgian-style strong dark ale. I’d go as far as to say that hops add an extra, yet complimentary complexity. Very nice indeed.
