Sampling Notes:
Served chilled in chalice glass.
Pours an attractive murky black body with a small dense tan head.
Unique and pungent sort of aroma, somewhat hoppy with notes of citrus, young red wine aromatics of tart blackberry, unripe plum, prune and blueberry.
Smooth, velvet-like texture, low carbonation, somewhat well-attentuated body making it deceptively strong.
Suprisingly smooth fruit-driven body for such a dark beer. Hint of dark chocolate and brown sugar at beginning move onto notes of prune, fig, apricot, blackberry, dried fruits and bitter orange lingering. Bitterness is quite high, finishes with drying spice and subtle drying alcohol warmth.
Certainly a unique Belgian-style strong dark ale. I’d go as far as to say that hops add an extra, yet complimentary complexity. Very nice indeed. aguyintx66 (78), Humble, Texas, USA Mar 9, 2009 Bottle. Poured a dark brown with a tan head. Has a sweet aroma of fruit and malt. Tastes sweet and malty. A pretty good beer. AGAquino (73), San Juan, Puerto Rico Mar 8, 2009 On tap at Bar Volo in Toronto. Dark mahogany colour with slight tan head. Sweet malty, dried fruit flavour, noticeable alcohol content. Lingering aftertaste. KrillWhetsuit (6), Rockford, Illinois, USA does not count Mar 8, 2009 Dark brown pour, minimal head fades quickly. Very pleasing aroma with a sweet fruity quality. Very carbonated in the mouth, Long bitey finish. Cavie (1317), Fort Worth, Texas, USA Mar 8, 2009 Updated: Aug 26, 2009Tastes strong of an IPA with lots of hops, slightly smoother than some established IPA’s.
Re-rate 8/26/09. Trying this 3 years after the original with tons more experience under my belt. Pours a dark brown with a quickly retreating head. Aroma is all of heavy scents. Dark wine, malts and heavy grape. Taste leaves a sharp tingle on the tongue with a dry finish. Heavy flavors also accompany the aroma. Not satisfying but damn good. Tastes of an IPA? What the fuck was I on? Beerbirder (5), Miami Lakes, Florida, USA does not count Mar 5, 2009 Aroma is fruity with a smooth malty flavor. Apperance is nice. pours out dark with a light head that disappears quickly. Although it is a little too carbonated for our taste, overall it is a good brew and what we expected for a Unibroue. fastcarjoe (8), Morton Grove, Illinois, USA does not count Mar 5, 2009 Updated: Mar 6, 2009Aroma is sweet, fruity notes everywhere, yeasty. Poured brown, plum in color with a nice off white head. A little heavy on the carbonation for my liking, seems to be typical Unibroue style. Flavor is mild with complex fruit notes and again, uniquely yeasty. Full bodied and stinging on the palate from the carbonation. Pleasing aftertaste. A nice brew. colinw (10), , British Columbia, Canada Mar 4, 2009 Pours a dark chocolaty brown, aroma some yeast and dark fruits - flavour is really smooth, the Unibroue yeastiness is there but more subdued than in their other beers that I’ve had. Malt and slight sweetness throughout, with interesting spices. Really great beer!
