Skidds (252), Ottawa, Ontario, Canada Aug 24, 2008 Another winner from the Unibroue line-up. Poured a dark black with an off-white, almost tan head. Aroma and flavour were primarily of caramel malts, darker fruit and some hints of spice. EHopper (274), Minnesota, USA Aug 23, 2008 Dark, dark carmel with a dense tan head. providing a luxurious mouth feel. Banana and spice aroma, sweet dark fruit and bread dough added to flavor. The smoothness is really something to admire.
A bit of sour at the finish, and some warmth in the belly. The only thing not perfect for me is that the taste comes and goes so quickly. nqualls (1429), Nashville, Tennessee, USA Aug 22, 2008 4 pack of 12 ozers. Poured into a Karmeliet tulip glass. Poured a dingy brown with a one finger brown head. Aroma is of dark, sweet over-ripe fruit some caramel, yeast and some spices. Low to moderate lacing. Flavor is of the same fruits, malt and a little alcohol to warm. Body was medium-heavy and the carbonation was medium-high. Great beer. chokmah33 (115), Bremerton, Washington, USA Aug 21, 2008 Sweet fruits (apricot, peach, orange, plum, blackberry), creamy, earthy yeast aroma. Some spice (clove, cinnamin, coriander). Roasted malts, reminds me of the smell of pastries.
Mellow fruity flavor (fig, raisin, plum). Subtle roasted malt.
Taste is sweet (carmel + toffee) but balanced, an elegant restrained brew that is a real treat. The 9% is unbelievable as there is little taste of alchohol. The earthy yeast flavor complements the fruity sweetness nicely.
Palate is ridiculously smooth (like butta!).
Creamy mouthfilling velvet texture. Plenty of bubbly, but not too much.
I have had mixed results with imported belgians, but I was very pleased with this one. Indulgence (141), Ajo, Arizona, USA Aug 21, 2008 Dark brown, almost opaque looking with beige 2 finger head, great belgian style lacing and look, this a belgian dark that really shows well, a complex mix yeast yesters of banana and clove, as well as dark, subtlely candied fruits like raisins, plums and pinot noir grapes, there’s some mustiness typical of belgians, flavors are a soft balance of the afformentioned nose, no need to go any further with that description, though I wish something stood out a little bit more, I enjoyed this almost as much as the Maudite. gameface23 (131), Haverhill, Massachusetts, USA Aug 20, 2008 Pours a muddy/murky brown with a nice looking tan head. Smell is sweet, with brown sugar dominating. The taste is great, with more brown sugar and plums. Not as much of a raisin flavor as other Belgian Strong Ales and I like this one better because of it. Sparky27 (1559), Phoenix, Arizona, USA Aug 19, 2008 12oz bottle. Pours a murky dark brown with a soap scum head and light lacing. Nose is sweet malt, dark fruits and brown sugar. Taste is figs, dates, caramelized sugar, yeast and a slight bitter finish. Medium mouth feel with carbonation that’s prickly on the tongue. Hides the alcohol well but very warming, even after a few sips. A nice enjoyable strong ale that, as per their commercial description, is very port wine-like. hellbilly (1492), scottsdale über alles, Arizona, USA Aug 17, 2008 pours a orange shade of woody dark brown with some yeasty clumps at the bottom. fluffy almond colored head cloaks the glass with foam as it slowly retreats. immense yeast aroma is savory at times... spice, wood, very soft camp fire smell, dates, raisins and a touch of alcohol. tastes like an oxidized red apple covered with REAL caramel, cinnamon and lots of yeasty dryness. it’s sweet without being over sweet. it leaves an aftertaste that reminds me of fake sugar. medium to full body with a soft velvety mouth feel...
