turboespresso (64), Port Moody, British Columbia, Canada Aug 10, 2009 Bottle. Dark brown with small head that does not last. Consistent carbonation. Fruity aroma. Taste of plum and cherry with overtones of chocolate and coffee. Fine complexity. Not much hop flavor. Hides the 9% alcohol very well. Smooth. Another nice ale from Unibroue which does not blow me away, but still satisfies. Reminds me of Chambly Noire but way more alcohol. BeerChaser0078 (284), Melbourne, Australia Aug 9, 2009 750ml bottle. Pours a dark copper with a tan head that diminishes quickly but doesn’t disappear altogether. The nose is beguiling: coffee, malt, molasses, plums, shiraz. Smooth and warming in the mouth, it has flavours of chocolate, sultanas, dates, port, christmas pudding. The alcohol is well hidden - hard to believe it has such a high abv. The Unibroue beers are consistantly impressive, especially their dark ales, and this is one of my favourites. Oh, and like the other Unibroues, great label. Ryan82SM (231), Louisville, Kentucky, USA Aug 8, 2009 Aroma of clover, ripe banana and tart cherries. Appearance is dark brown with a creamy head. Flavor was similar to the nose. Palate was lively and bubbly. I enjoyed this one. locust (10), Brampton, Ontario, Canada Aug 8, 2009 Beautiful chocolate colored beer, smells to me like cocoa and maybe some coffee.. and something sweet i can’t put my finger on. Molasses? Tastes like malt.. And molasses. Tan colored head, disappears quickly, little trace. Extremely tasty with a 9% ABV that tastes like much less... Top quality, top marks... great beer. beernovice39 (240), South Carolina, USA Aug 5, 2009 Nice rich chocolate brown with a this tan head. Alcohol hidden in fruity tones. Liquid is thick and reminds me of a wine.Almost as good as the Chimay blue. bigtaster (184), Grand Rapids, USA Aug 5, 2009 750 ml bottle in tulip. Dark brown color with nice large off white head and semi-hazy. he aroma is fantastic with a huge burst of fruit and floral aromas and very intense, a lot of dried apricots and raisins. The beer is very sweet with a good amount of yeasty flavors that bring out the dried apricot and grapes (almost a similar sweetness as a mead). The finish was a long sweet melting blueberry. Overall a very interesting and delicious beer, but hard to drink a lot of it due to the sweetness. Davros (201), Australia Aug 4, 2009 Updated: Aug 5, 2009Gusher. Dark copper pour, lots of yeast floating round. Good head, nice persistence. Would have liked some lacing though.
Aroma is lovely, with the Unibroue yeast, plums, prunes, blackberries, candi sugar, caramel, nougat, red wine and sweet sherry. Very perfumy/rose-like.
Taste shows more of that classic yeast, lots of residual sweetness (candi sugar, I guess). Esters are reminiscent of lighter fruit than the aroma, namely pear and white grapes (more akin to a tripel!). Some alcohol, but reasonably well masked.
Not as full a body as you’d expect, but it works well the the lighter flavours. Not too much carbonation (unlike a lot of the Unibroue beers). Very slight warming on the palate. Quite enjoyable.
This seems to have a less dominant yeast character (than the other Unibroue beers), I’m pretty sure that’s why I’ve rated it so much higher. Bejaaamin (110), London, Ontario, Canada Jul 30, 2009 deep black, hint of red at edges. Nose; tangy citrus, nutmeg, cloves, eucalyptus, sweet. Mouth; herbal, a little too sweet, good, but not amazing.
