Commercial Description:
Strong Belgian type ale similar to a Port wine ! Is as dark as can be, mellow in taste with an aroma of ripe fruits. It can be compared to an old porto and is brewed from well roasted malt.

[12/15/02] In a few short months, my palate has gained a bit more maturity, and I can say with confidence that this is one of the better belgian strongs on the market, and it is so ubiquitous, that accessibility makes it an even better beer. This is one of the best unibroue has to offer, which is saying a lot, considering they make such great beer. [9/16/02]Very large head that disipates quickly. Fruity aroma that gives just a hint of the sweet, smooth fruit flavor of this ale. Very smooth considering it’s alcohol content.

Wine like aroma with sugar and some malt. Appearance is hazy and dark brown with a large head. Strong alcohol taste but it does have beautiful toasted malt and caramel with figs and nuts. A little vinegar in the aftertaste but overall its good tasting. I will have to say that I would enjoy it more if I was a fan of high alcohol beers.

Re-Rate 12/31/02: The pour a deep murky plum color, the head Bunyanesque and the texture spumous, the lace a sticky thick clinging sheet that completely obscures the glass. Aroma of malt, hints of ripe fruit I like to say plums, sweet and quite a clean and fresh nose. Malt dominates the start, sweet and the top middling in feel, finish is stingingly acidic, hops robust and plentiful, quite dry aftertaste also long lasting. The high ABV makes this a fine winter warmer, and a good beer to sample on “New Year’s Eve”. Ranks #189 on my current 1000 beer master list.

A much more caramel and mellow aroma than the other Unibroues that I’ve had. Still has a crisp twang. Great appearance. Malty, pear-cidery, with carbonated zip. After venting, the bottom of the glass is better than the top. I have to steal Heat’s analysis on the aftertaste. Very warm. A well-crafted brew. Hold some on the tongue and exhale through your nose

Cloudy dark amber beer. Fluffy roasted malt aroma with notes of chocolate, cream and nut. Flavor is very exquisite with evident notes of caramel, raisins, fruit and spices. Thanks to Jacob Lövenlund & MartinKubert for sharing this nice beer with me!

12 oz bottle. I’ve been greatly looking forward to this beer, almost certainly because it is a) 99th percentile b) only $3, even though its a belgian style beer and c) has a really sweet bottle. On pure beer quality alone I would probably have given this a 3.8 but I had to give it a bonus point for those reasons...

Aroma is very vineous, fruity, lots of plum, dark grape, some spiciness as it warms. Pours with a big, aggresive head, that unfortunately fades fast. Color is a very deep, dark brown, though certainly not black. At first the taste seemed pretty uncomplex and boring (though nice full palate), though as it warms much more is coming out. Rich, dark malts, slight fruitiness, caramel, good belgian spiciness (pepper, allspice maybe?). Also takes on some nice yeastiness as the last remnants of the bottle pour. Certainly a fine beer to be enjoying on this Monday night.

[159-20061225] 341mL. Ribena raspberry/blackcurrant aroma with ginger and a hint of plastic. Lightly cloudy, dark brown ruby red body with a medium-lasting off-white foamy head. Medium body with smooth alcohol integration. Very nicely blended.
