Cloudy burgundy-chestnut colour. Rich plummy, raisiny, port-like depths in both the palate and the aroma. Notes of apricot, tangerine and Special B also noted. A little fizzy (common problem with Unibroue these days) but with spectacular, unfolding fruits and dark malts. Sleek and sumptuous, these raisins, plums and malts wash over the palate. I remember why I love this beer.

Dark amber ale. Nice fresh aroma of hop and porto wine. Powerful brew, strong body, malt, raisin, alcohol, light liquorice. The palate is balanced but not very long and hoppy.</br>To be aged.

Hazy brown with medium light brown head. Sweet aroma with overripe fruits, yeast and roasted malt. Flavor is quite sweet with notes of dates, prunes, roasted malt, liquerice and yeast. Very vinous and good balanced. Alcohol is warming and well hidden.

Quickly dissipating head leaves a still liquid that’s a little on the red side of muddy brown. Aroma is curranty/raisin and sour cherry, with hints of malt and alcohol. In the flavor, the fruity and malty richness is impressive, as is the complexity. One drawback is that the alcohol presence is more than I would like.

75cl bottle at Stella’s Tap and Tapas Bar, Vancouver. Hazy deep brown, sparse beige head. Belgian yeast aroma, citrus lemon, some choc malt. Quite sharp in mouth, but then lovely choccy malt matches the lemon and yeast. Spritzey finish. Lovely balance and flavours. Best Unibroue beer I’ve had. Some vinous fruits. Does remind me of a Rochefort 8. Got a strong Belgian beer style resemblance.

Bottled 33cl (BB 01/2007)
Dark hazy nut brown, almost opaque color, small tanned head. Nose has plums, roasted malts, coffee, chocolate and hints of metal. Medium-bodied. Starting with tickling carbonation, mouthfeel is actually relatively thin. Toffeeish, fruity (raisins), sweetish with loads of roast with some licorice in the finish. Some warming alcohol in the finish, long roasted-sweet aftertaste. Complex and enjoyable - and dangerous - easy to drink.

Dark color and a nice head, that is quickly disappearing. The aroma has notes of yeast, sweetness and spice. The mouthfeel is nice and full. You are not in doubt: It’s a strong beer, but the alcohol is well hidden. The flavour has sweetness and notes of yeast, spice, ripe, dark fruits (plum, figs), caramel and a nice bitterness that lasts throughout the long finish, in which fruity notes pop up once a while. A nice and complex beer.
