Commercial Description:
Strong Belgian type ale similar to a Port wine ! Is as dark as can be, mellow in taste with an aroma of ripe fruits. It can be compared to an old porto and is brewed from well roasted malt.

Has a cherry licorice aroma. Body is dark brown with good off white head that disipated. More of a wine flavor than beer. Alcohol content well hidden in this beer. Smooth and easy on the palate. Like a porter with out the extra sweet flavor and aftertaste. A good brew.

Fantastic, just a great taste. Stays with you for a strong late bite. Nice color, excellent dark, but not too heavy beer.

"Great bouquet" says Bill. Yeasty and fruity nose - rather strong. Dark maroon color and a low tight head with good retention. A big mix of tastes: yeast, spices, berries (black currants) and licorice. Got a slightly napkiny aftertaste though. Medium body and a great balance. Powerful quality beer.

12 oz bottle. Pours a dark mahogany with ruby highlights, 1/4 head composed of fine bubbles that settles into a thick creamy mass that lasts till the end. Aroma is heavy in plum fruitiness, heavy malt, and a general sweet smell. Very complex aroma, I can see the comparison to port that they mention on the bottle. Flavor is very port-like as promised. Deep rich fruit, very light sweetness, a rich nutty flavor similar to Frangelico without all the sugar. Soft on the palate with a lively carbonation. This coats the mouth providing a long finish with prominant alcohol warmth that reaches down to your belly and a lingering sweetness. This is just overall a really enjoyable brew, this really defies any classification to a real style to me, which is why I guess it’s put into the Belgian stong style. Definately my favorite from Unibroue so far, but I’ve got lots to go thankfully.

Had some of this at a Unibroue tasting this week, and realized that it had been so long since I’d had it last that I’d forgotten how much I enjoyed it. Beautiful purple-black colour, spicy malt and dark fruit in the nose and flavour, ending with a warm alcohol glow. Lovely stuff, I really should drink it more often.

Opaque dark brown to black in colour with a soft brown head which stays for a long period. Many thousand small bubbles rising upwards on the side of the glass make for an interesting sight. Smells of must and subtle fruitiness with little else. Good overall fruity taste with definate roasty qualities and a carbonated aftertaste that leaves the mouth feeling coated well, but not overly so. This one is a very good sip, as you can take one sip and taste it for a while (the whole sentence above :-), but definately not overpowering. I would most likely compare this to (as one user wrote), Chimay Bleu, because of its maltiness. But, in contrast to that version of Chimay, this has a lighter taste and more carbonation and definately more of a subtle aftertaste. In addition, the alcohol is hidden well. I taste a bit, but not nearly as much as it contains. A good beer, but i've had a few better in this style. Had to try it because it was on the top 50!

12oz bottle, Brickskeller. Pours a dark brown color; fluffy, off-white head with brilliant lacing. Yeasty, doughy, and light coriander aroma. Medium-to-full mouthfeel: plenty of yeast, chewy vanilla esters, and doughy character; dense, chewy belgian core; some spice and white pepper. Lengthy, yeasty and marshmallow finish.

Pours very dark. Almost like pepsi in the glass with a slow fizz. Aroma is malty and almost alchoholic. Little head on the pour. Fruity complex flavor and nice body. Some plum flavor maybe some rasin. It is definitely a unique taste. Thick enough to stay with me for a bit. I like this one and the chocolatey finish is outstanding. Feels great in your mouth. I’d buy this again.
