Commercial Description:
Strong Belgian type ale similar to a Port wine ! Is as dark as can be, mellow in taste with an aroma of ripe fruits. It can be compared to an old porto and is brewed from well roasted malt.

12 oz bottle. Pours a dark mahogany with ruby highlights, 1/4 head composed of fine bubbles that settles into a thick creamy mass that lasts till the end. Aroma is heavy in plum fruitiness, heavy malt, and a general sweet smell. Very complex aroma, I can see the comparison to port that they mention on the bottle. Flavor is very port-like as promised. Deep rich fruit, very light sweetness, a rich nutty flavor similar to Frangelico without all the sugar. Soft on the palate with a lively carbonation. This coats the mouth providing a long finish with prominant alcohol warmth that reaches down to your belly and a lingering sweetness. This is just overall a really enjoyable brew, this really defies any classification to a real style to me, which is why I guess it’s put into the Belgian stong style. Definately my favorite from Unibroue so far, but I’ve got lots to go thankfully.

Bottle, 33 cl. Pours murky reddish brown, with a creamy and stable small beige head. Roasted malt aroma with dried fruits, some woody and earthy notes, some spices and yeast, and a clear but not overwhelming touch of alcohol. Medium bodied, quite smooth but with a lively carbonation. Nicely balanced with a light sweetness lingering.

Sampled this at the Great Decatur Beer Tasting Festival. brown color, white head. Lots of malt and raisin in the nose. A very sweet flavor. Rich and robust malts. A full-bodied strong beer.

Bottle pours almost black with a tannish head. Aroma is of dates, plums, raisins, cherries, and perhaps a bit of brown sugar. Mouthfeel is very lively, exploding with flavor when swished around. Cloying sweetness emerges on first sip. Hints of Molasses embrace the back of the tongue when finishing. Very complex, very nice. Unibroue does it again!

Dark brown, fluffy bubbling head. Flavors were plum, fig, rum, clove, and towards the end big time chocolate. This was complex and I will seek it out again.

This may sound odd but the flavor reminded me a bit of watermelon. Maybe it was the esters combined with some of the other yeasty flavors but it was interesting. Smells like a good belgian should. Not as spicy as some, but the estery fruitiness is good. Having trouble with some of the spicier belgians, this is a good beer to me. It had less of the fuzzy mouthfeel that a lot of Belgians have. I think that’s a good thing as some feel too fuzzy.
