Sweet taste on the tip of the tongue but a wine like spice in the back of the throat. The malts and spice combine to an almost cigar-like aftertaste that is complex and enjoyable. fordest (1954), Santee/San Diego, California, USA
| 4.1 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 8/10 | 3/5 | 8/10 | 4/5 | 18/20 | Jun 10, 2005 12 oz. bottle. Poured deep mahogony with a decent off-white head. Did not leave much lacing to speak of. Aromas of raisins and other ripe, dark fruits. Alcohol notes in the nose and the flavor. Flavor also brought in grape and spice on the aftertaste. Quite vineous and very smooth. Nice beer. hophead75 (1954), Boonton, New Jersey, USA

| 3.4 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 3/5 | 7/10 | 3/5 | 14/20 | Nov 19, 2008 750 ml bottle. Pours a cloudy dark chestnut with a few scattered bubbles for a head that quickly disburse. Pleasant aroma of malt, dates, raisins and molasses. The flavor is similar with again malt, dates, raisins and molasses all present. The flavors are a tad watered down and seem tired. I received this as a gift, so perhaps this was an older bottle. phishpond417 (1946), Madison, Wisconsin, USA
| 3.9 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 9/10 | 4/5 | 8/10 | 4/5 | 14/20 | May 29, 2008 In the first intial pour the head is an enormously tan colour that you think is going to attack you, so you take a step back. Cautiously, you bring your nose forward and smell the lively fruit that bounces around inside the glass. Once it settles a few minutes later, the colour of the beer is dark red or light chocolate. Lots of citrusyness, a very intense taste, with every sip I never got used to it. scraff (1942), Baltimore, Maryland, USA
| 4.3 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 9/10 | 4/5 | 8/10 | 4/5 | 18/20 | Sep 28, 2004 Deep dark hazy browns and oranges, thin tan fizzy head. Ultra complex nose of raisin, plum, cherry, brown sugar and spice, with additional red wine notes to boot. Intense vanilla coated dark fruit and spiced fruitcake flavors blend beautifully. Hint of alcohol shows up at cellar temps, but does not overwhelm. Full bodied, fizzy carbonation, dry, dark fruit and caramel finish. Awesome brew! MilkmanDan (1940), Eagan, Minnesota, USA
| 3.6 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 8/10 | 5/5 | 7/10 | 3/5 | 13/20 | Apr 18, 2002 Interesting. To begin, has possibly one of the coolest labels in the world. Beer itself isn’t bad either. Pours darker than I expected, a deep brown with hints of red. Much bigger head than anticipated, very thick and creamy, though it didn’t last too long. The head fizzed and popped loudly enough to be very noticeable; it was sort of like putting your ear over a bowl of Rice Krispies. Nice scent, lots of caramel and raisins. Flavor is very aggressive, with large amounts of maltiness. Plenty of fruit here, plums, apples, and raisins along with nuttiness and breadiness. Finish has exceedingly strong alcohol--no attempt has been made to mask the 9% abv whatsoever. Is very spicy, with loads of clove, coriander, pepper, and rock candy. Incarnadine appearance with a rich, strong body that packs a wallop, but is quite stream-lined and easily quaffed. Could use a bit more carbonation, but loved the winyness--much different from barley wines as well as the breadiness and subtle piny hopping.. A smooth, hearty ale sure to warm the spirits.
Re-rated 1/24/09 - This is much more extraordinary than I had recalled. Lively body and a panoply of flavors make this a meal in a 12 oz class. Complex, sapid, and piquant yeast rumbles through the malt. Sensational. Will keep some bottles handy and look forward to imbibing again soon.
