First pour into a pint glass (I know) gave an exploding 2" head that wouldn’t die, I had to drink my way through it. Poured the second half of the bottle 4 hours later into a wine glass, with little head. It’s got a faint plastic smell a little similar to Judgement day, Hmmm, I wonder if it is a hint of corriander? no wait, banana, that’s it. The head is thick and creamy, with excellent lacing. The flavor is too light and needs some sweetness, which makes it an excellent beer to pair with food. Should i give it a 16 or 17? Hmmm Sparky27 (1640), Phoenix, Arizona, USA
| 3.9 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 8/10 | 4/5 | 8/10 | 4/5 | 15/20 | Aug 19, 2008 12oz bottle. Pours a murky dark brown with a soap scum head and light lacing. Nose is sweet malt, dark fruits and brown sugar. Taste is figs, dates, caramelized sugar, yeast and a slight bitter finish. Medium mouth feel with carbonation that’s prickly on the tongue. Hides the alcohol well but very warming, even after a few sips. A nice enjoyable strong ale that, as per their commercial description, is very port wine-like. kiefdog (1639), Tampa, Florida, USA

The aroma hits you right away, not over powering and not lite. Slow pour brings a dark brown color with a lot of tastey head. Great flavor, gets better with every sip. Palate stays with you for awhile . A must try. Cheers Canada! jerohen (1615), Bussum, Netherlands
| 4.2 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 10/10 | 4/5 | 8/10 | 4/5 | 16/20 | Oct 28, 2003 Pretty dark appearance, hazy, off-white head. Pretty complex: chocolate malty aroma and flavour, some sugar, alcohol, roasted malts, dried fruit and raisins. Lingering alcoholic finish. In the style of Chimay Bleu. Very nice brew, can only get better with aging. TURDFERGUSON (1608), Carrboro, North Carolina, USA

The appearance... Hmm. It has a lovely misty deep red colour with a nice, thick tan head.
The aroma... It’s a typical Belgian-style aroma; some random spice, orange and tangerine. Not as complex as I hoped, but still lovely... (Edit: Wrong temperature definitely... as this warmed down, it got a lot more complex, with notes of prosecco, grapes, sugar, an alcohol).
The taste... Agrumes again, spices (coriander), some apricot on the edges, with a....flat maltiness (don’t know how to express myself better..wood? Nah.), and maybe some raisins. A touch acidic. No trace of alcohol at first, but it develops in the end. Feels like it should be having one more dimension, one that got lost somewhere.
Didn’t impress me as much as I hoped it would. It’s a very nice beer, but this sample lacked the complexity I expected. Ethereal (1599), London, Greater London, England
| 3.9 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 4/5 | 8/10 | 4/5 | 16/20 | Jul 8, 2007 330ml bottle, courtesy of the Cracked Kettle, Amsterdam. Pours a chocolate brown, with lively carbonation and a large tan head at first. The aroma is caramel and spices and the flavour is a wonderful mix of berries, fruit, raisins and liquorice. The palate is full and slight creamy and the strength is apparent but held in check. Overall, a cracking Trappist beer. It may not be in the same class as Westvleteren, but few things are. This is excellent beer and I was gutted I only had a single bottle to enjoy!
