Aroma of malty fruit (prunes), light roast, belgian-like spicing and yeast. Flavor of dark fruit and other lightly citric fruit, grassy and spicy yeastiness, candy sugar; overall sweet but balanced with spices and yeast. Nice palate, the same as other unibrous. Enjoyed this beer. guzzler67 (1286), Hanover, Maryland, USA
| 4.3 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 8/10 | 4/5 | 9/10 | 4/5 | 18/20 | Apr 27, 2003 Dark, cloudy appearance. Nice head, but it doesn't stick around too long. Initial taste was tart cherry, the aftertaste a bit more raisiny. Very smooth finish. Alcohol punch will hit you when you are done. A subtle, complex, well-crafted beer. | 4.3 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 8/10 | 4/5 | 9/10 | 4/5 | 18/20 | Sep 18, 2007 Brown bottle, 341 ml, purchased in Trois-Pistoles, savoured in the Trois-Pistoles trappist glass on September 18 2007; eye: dark mahogany, hazy, good effervescence - you can hear it crick, crack, crock like Rice Crispies, nice creamy beige head that disappears a bit too quickly, no lacing; nose: rich odours, a mix of caramelized malt, of alcohol warmth, of candied fruits, of freshness, of Belgian yeast, of spices; mouth: velvety, smooth, caramelized malt, nice hops that stands to the malt, but then dances with it so that the malt and hops each come to the forefront, small dark berries, a bit of tobacco, the yeast is present throughout the sip, the alcohol only appears as faint pepper, oh yes, I forgot the spices and its fruitiness, long finale in caramelized malt and yeast with an enjoyable hint of bitterness, nice balance between all of the flavours, lightly sweet, mildly bitter, medium to full body, average carbonation; overall: really good
| 3.8 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 4/5 | 7/10 | 4/5 | 16/20 | Mar 10, 2006 Bottled. Great looking, hazy brown color with a marvelous tan head. Ultra yeasty aroma dripping with overripe pear. Mildy sweet cinnimon sugars coat the tongue in an almost unexected turbulent manner. Slighly thin texture overall, but extra rich flavors make up for this minor deficiency. Fairly typical dark ripe fruits of raisin and plum, but the yeastiness of this brew is what really gives it a unique signature. Quite tasty, and only a hint of the 9% shines through on the palate. Smack of light prune. jrob21 (1277), Atlanta, Georgia, USA
| 3 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 5/5 | 6/10 | 2/5 | 10/20 | Jul 31, 2005 Updated: Oct 15, 2005Is as dark as can be, mellow in taste with an aroma of ripe fruits. It can be compared to an old porto and is brewed from well roasted malt. Nonetheless is a bitter and stale beer. Don’t drink this one again. drfabulous (1275), Columbia, Missouri, USA
| 3.8 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 4/5 | 8/10 | 3/5 | 16/20 | Aug 23, 2006 I love this beer. It is intense and malty. I drink it in the bottle in Michigan and on tap at Zeno’s in State College. Americans need to wise up to this brewery across the border. Trois Pistoles is their best. highlandlad (1275), Sydney, Australia
| 3.9 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 9/10 | 3/5 | 7/10 | 4/5 | 16/20 | May 2, 2005 An intensely fruity and port-like strong Belgian ale. Poured the deepest brown with an airy 1.5cm head that settled disappointingly quickly. Rich vinous aroma has me thinking of dusty wine cellars and the jam factory in the NSW cherry town, Young. Dominant characteristics are plums, sherbet, merlot, cherry jam and blackcurrant cordial. Medium-bodied, creamy but arguably over-carbonated. Fizzes on the tongue. Flavourwise, the port comparison in the description is valid. It’s intense, with sweet cherries and merlot-like notes to the fore. The finish is dry, with lots of lingering fruit. It’s an excellent strong ale but I find the alcohol a fraction too prominent. Don De Dieu remains my desert island Unibroue. | 4.1 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 8/10 | 4/5 | 8/10 | 5/5 | 16/20 | Oct 11, 2006 Dark fruit nose with notes of plum, fig, raisin, black cherry, black curant, molasses and anise. Wonderful flufy chewy mouthfeel with perfect carbonation. Layered and complex flavors develop as you drink thru it, nice peppery finish.
