Commercial Description:
Strong Belgian type ale similar to a Port wine ! Is as dark as can be, mellow in taste with an aroma of ripe fruits. It can be compared to an old porto and is brewed from well roasted malt.

Pours blackish, with huge port, malt, prune, and fruit aromas. Tastes very dense, with a port, cognac, malt, and fruity finish. Slightly dry and harsh at the end, but a very complex beer.

1 yr old 341 mL bottle L133. Pre-Sleeman. Hazy dark reddish brown with a thick moka head. Sweet raisin aroma with coriander notes, fruity, and alcohol. Fudge develops as beer warms up. Sweet licorice raisins in mouth with tequilla alcohol. Notes of coriander and iron. Earthy overtones. Rich and overpowering, but smooths out as beer warms up.

Head is initially average sized, frothy, off-white, mostly diminishing. Body is hazy dark amber, bottle conditioned. Aroma is moderately malty (cookie, toasted bread), lightly hoppy (flowers, herbs), moderately yeasty (cobwebs), with notes of brown sugar, banana, orange, clove, vanilla, cola, and alcohol. Flavor is heavily sweet, moderately acidic, lightly bitter. Finish is moderately sweet, moderately acidic, moderately bitter, short. Medium body, watery/velvety texture, lively carbonation, lightly astringent, moderately alcoholic. As with Maudite, I like the aroma a lot (just a tad artificial smelling), but it just doesn’t fulfill its promises in the mouth experience...flimsy and kind of watery, with a quick finish that doesn’t leave you wanting to drink more. Nice potential, but doesn’t fully come together.

Bottle. Creamy white good mostly lasting head. Powerfull hoppy aroma, a little malty. OK flavorm, average finish. Very oily palate, but how can this rate over 4? its not that good.

Aug 2001: I don't know where to begin with this one, so I won't. Very vinous, strong, complex, but so smooth going down! Little on the nose, or this would be a great one! Will reconsider this rating when I have the rest of the 4-pack....rerated 8/14 mmm better.7/5/8/5/17

August 2004: 750 ml bottle corked & caged...dark maple/plum, largish medium-duration head. Plummy/raisiny nose, not as assertive as it could be. Hugely malty, very sweet; some good raisin/cola/grape hints, very clean and fairly dry finish. This is eminently drinkable and delicious, but at this moment I'm inclined to say, not one of the brewer's more original offerings.

have had this twice since my first encounter and expected to be converted but found no reason to be. stupidly sweet, cheap red wine and baking soda yeast flavour. predictable. tastes a lot like their other beers. unpleasant burnt candy. one of the worst of its style.

Aroma of darkish fruit. Nearly opaque brown color with a fine, determined, but not thick, tannish head. Starts with fruit reminiscent of cherries. Followed by malt. A fairly strong carbonation. No noticeable hop. The malt goes on. Good.

Got in 12 oz. bottles. Has a dark clody brown color. The head is small and a light tan color. Aroma is brown sugar, and a very strange peppermint or menthol. The taste is peaches, tobacco and bread. The finish is a weird sourness. While very interesting, the entire package was thrown off a little by the astringent aroma. Still, an enjoyable drink.
