Flavours are a celebration in the mouth sugar sweet malty caramel, orange, spice, berries and a lasting sensation of liquid chocolate with just a little tartness catching the edges of the tongue to contrast. Mouthfeel is velvet-smooth and quite thick and rich. This is a perfect dessert drink or something to be savoured as an evening drink. I've been saving this bottle and just popped it open to celebrate the completion of my first all-grain brew session. It was the perfect choices and I can feel my spirits awakening. Bottle. | 3.8 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 3/5 | 9/10 | 4/5 | 15/20 | Jun 9, 2004 Bottle, GL snifter: Muddled reddish brown with a fading off-white head and some lace. The aroma has notes of roasted dark malts, caramel, pipe tobacco, ripe currents and pears, floral hops, and woody/ earthy yeast esters. The nose however is weaker than expected from style. The taste is what makes this beer. Wonderful fruity and spicy notes throughout with a light vinous nature. Mild bitterness and a touch of acidity provides depth and balance. Nice raisiny and mocha undertones too. The mouthfeel is lively and dangerously refreshing for the style and ABV (which is very well hidden). Started questionable but finished with a bang! This is one darn solid brew, now the question is, will Sleeman screw it up? Recommended. cgarvieuk (4214), Edinburgh, Scotland

| 4.1 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 8/10 | 4/5 | 8/10 | 4/5 | 17/20 | Jun 28, 2008 Sampled during Cellar’s Wine & Spirits Wednesday evening tasting via Unibroue representative. Pours a hazy brownish amber brew with a heavy tan head that has some nice retention. Aroma of roasted caramel malt, dried figs, brown sugar, some dark berries, and yeast. Taste is medium to full bodied, some carbonation with flavors of chocolate, figs, yeast and brown sugar. Finish is quite sweet, some light metallic character with the high alcohol and a cherry and yeast aftertaste. This was one my favorites of the evening. goldtwins (4084), Nesconset, New York, USA

| 4.1 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 4/5 | 9/10 | 4/5 | 17/20 | Oct 25, 2005 2004 750mL bottle. Poured a beautiful deep sparkling ruby with an ample 1" well-retained beige head. Deep fruits (plums, berries, raisins), cobwebby and bready Belgian yeast, cloves, and an underlying malty sweetness graced the nose. Flavors blended wonderously together... like a dry spicy bread with baked in dark fruits.. and booze. Thick and kind of chewy on the palate, allowing the subtleties of the flavors to find all the taste buds... but the sweetness almost became cloying at the finish.
