Top pick from Canada’s finest brewery will hold its own against Belgian ales. Nice at the end of a meal or for lunch instead of a heavy latte. Seriously, amazing intersection of the "unibroue taste" with strong roasty stout and Belgian influences, very dark, sharp, dark fruits, maltiness, that Belgian tang in the background, the alcohol (9%) behaves itself and has been known to sneak up on the unwary. This and McAuslan St. Ambroise Oatmeal Stout are my easily available go-to six packs if nothing else appeals. Try it, eh? Radek Kliber (3950), Toronto (Can) Krotoszyn (Pol), Ontario, Canada

Nice beer to finalize night Great look, dark amber , huge great looking head , one of the best looking beers I had . I found that it was also a bit cherry, fruity and nicely warming. beerguy101 (3940), Newark, California, USA
| 4.1 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 8/10 | 4/5 | 8/10 | 5/5 | 16/20 | Jan 23, 2003 Dark purple color. Small head. Aroma is slightly vinous, fruity and dusky. Malty and fruity. Very complex flavors; raisins, grapes, figs with a musty undertone. This is a very nice beer. Very smooth, it hides the 9% alcohol very well. There is a hint of alcohol tartness on the tongue. Tasty beer. Mouthfeel is full and round. Finish is slightly bitter. jerc (3936), Toronto, Ontario, Canada

Am finally rating this as a reward to myself after a 45 minute bike ride in the rain so it is even nicer than usual. Pours very dark mostly opaque ruby with a large off white head that diminished to leave a respectable covering. Aroma is a sweet fruitiness with firey alcohol notes hiding beneath it and slight hints of spice and yeast as well. The flavour is big vinuous fruit and malt with some spice and a pleast hint of licorice or anise at times. Did not like this one the first time I had it... oh how wrong I was. Combination of a friends birthday and a brewers banquet made me take another look at this one. thedm (3836), Fort Wayne, Indiana, USA
| 4.3 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 8/10 | 5/5 | 8/10 | 5/5 | 17/20 | Jun 9, 2003 This brew poured an envigorated large head of fine to medium sized bubbles that left little lacing and lasted a good length of time. Its body was a very cloudy semi-opaque deep brown color. It has a very nice strong malt aroma and a very smotth initial flavor that finishes much more complex than it starts. its high alcohol content is well hidden in its flavor. The flavoe is very hard to describe. It is highly complex with a lightly fizzy, tongue tingling sensation of malts and spices. Extremely good brew. I will definately try this again in one of their larger bottles. Grovlam (3810), Copenhagen, Denmark

Head was huge off-white and very fizzy that mostly lasted. Excellent lacing. Hazy dark brown color. Close to perfect appearance in my book. Aroma was complex. The first sniff is clear Belgium yeast with an array of other notes. Caramel, wood, grain, licorice, nutty, molasses, light chocolate, some celery like sharp notes, date, prune, peach, port. This one leaves and impression of being very unique in the bouquet. Nothing I have ever experienced before. Full bodied with a fizzy carbonation and light alcoholic texture. Moderated sweet flavor, not much bitterness here. Sweet fruity and light alcoholic finish. Excellent! Braudog (3766), Dayton, Ohio, USA
