Pours out to a plum color in the glass with a decent, brown sugar-looking head. The aroma is all over the place, with fruit, plums, yeast and although it sounds strange, a sweet tart candy smell. Taste is excellent, with a variety of spices lingering in the mouth. Mouthfeel is near perfect and the finish, while warming, masks the high ABV. Yum. fraternie (710), Chicago, Illinois, USA

Hints of grape and plum, very smooth and somewhat spicy. Extremely sweet but not cloying, balanced well. Very dark body and incredible head retention. A world class beer. A bit of a progenator as far as style goes. Outside of Belgium we can call it Belgian-like. Made inside Belgium this would be an artisinal classic. MikeF (528), Cleveland, Ohio, USA

A slight fruity sweetness to it. Very mellow without an overpowering taste. Sip it slow. Drew Blood (151), Mt.Prospect, Illinois, USA

| 4.5 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 9/10 | 5/5 | 8/10 | 4/5 | 19/20 | Feb 28, 2003 Pours with a very large head that dissipates quite quickly with no lacing at all. Smells sour with a touch of malt. Color is a slighty cloudy deep shade of red blended with amber. Body is a little thin, not uncommon really. The commercial description is pretty good, has a great port taste to it, some citrus and some roasted flavors. The alcohol blends nicely, quite a warming burn that lingers a bit. A sweet slighty spicey aftertaste finish is quite pleasant. Overall, quite exceptional!! Admiral (524), Schnecksville, Pennsylvania, USA

These, plus brown sugar, make up the bulk of the flavor; the hops contribute a nice grassiness. Vinous notes are plentiful, as well. Very port-like. There's a little bit of warming alcohol, but it harmonizes well with everything else. Medium to full body. All in all a well-balanced, great beer. Thanks to my uncle John for bringing a 750 of this stuff.
