Aromas of Christmas -- not the spicey, mulled Christmas, but the Christmas morning in the kitchen smells like brown sugar, fruit cake, deep vinous notes. Lovely. Flavors remind of a dubbel that has been reduced over a stove...deep and malty, it’s too complex for my amature palate to understand. Has some recognizable Unibroue characteristics. Dark fruits all over the place, each in its place as the balance of this brew is sublime. Nice dry finish. BroueNeault (157), Montréal, Quebec, Canada

| 4.5 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 9/10 | 4/5 | 9/10 | 5/5 | 18/20 | Nov 23, 2003 This "ale on lees" is a devilishly strong ale that just happens to go well with steamed belgium-style mussels and pommes frites. I'm also partial as Unibroue is one of my favorite brewers. As the label accurately states this is a mellow dark ale that lingers like a port wine! The 9% ABV is subtle and suprising. VERY aromatic. A hint of chocolate and a hint of rasberry! BelgianGirl (89), West Chester, Ohio, USA

One of my personal favorites. Wonderful taste, not too sour or funky. Just a hint of lactic sourness on the aftertaste, like they mixed 5% lambic in it. Gromit (461), Port Orchard, Washington, USA

Damn, maybe I should have aged it some. Granted, it's the last beer in my 'fridge so it's number was up anyway, but the thought intrigues...
Pours a murky redish brown with a huge head but very little lacing.
Smells very fruity; bananas are the most obvious scent with cloves hanging around.
Tastes like ripe fruit. Again, bananas and cloves, but there's some toffee in there as well. It's very complex and spicy; I'm wishing I had a book of adjectives right now. This tastes really good.
Mouthfeel is full. I was expecting it to be overly carbonated after pouring it, but it's not. Drinkability suffers only from the high alcohol content, although I really can't taste the alcohol.
Fine offering from Canada.
