Strong Belgian type ale similar to a Port wine ! Is as dark as can be, mellow in taste with an aroma of ripe fruits. It can be compared to an old porto and is brewed from well roasted malt.

Exceptional beer. Dark fruit, vanilla, chocolate and caramel notes. And yet with all this complexity, its remarkable quaffable.

Update with no change in rating: One of the new and fresh bottles arriving locally wasn't at all the same as my earlier sampling. This one came out exceptionally attenuated. Sweet and fruitier flavors are masked by a definite and unwanted alcohol presence. The body was surprisingly thin. The sample would barely warrant a 3 rating, but I'm leaving my original until I can verify what's what.

Impressive by any means. This beer is dark, fairly fruity and very strong. This is an amazing beer. Unibroue struck gold here.

A rich, very complex Belgian. Dark ruby red in color emitting a sweet fruity aroma. Highly carbonated to style which accentuates its beautiful sweet, dark ripe fruit taste. Reminiscent of raisin, fig and black cherry with a hint of vanilla. Must be enjoyed at cellar temps to fully bring out its complexities. The higher alcohol level really warms it all up nicely. A genuine treat!

341ml bottle. Finally! Deep murky brown with amber highlights, everlasting rocky tan head. Lotsa little bubble spots. Aroma is very pleasing. Initially roasted malt with candied sugar. Sweet fruit, dark cherries & plums. Hints of a spice I cannot quite name. Flavor is bitter, slightly toasty as well as sweet, a good balance. Alcohol is well hidden. Body is a high-medium on my scale with the effervescence of pop rocks almost. Very warming finish leaving a plummy & slightly sour aftertaste. Will be buying more soon.

Dark rubyish color, thick, creamy tan head. The nose is full of fruit with a nice sweet maltiness. A touch of peppery alcohol and some light chocolate finishing the aroma off. Very smooth with a firm malt backbone and some dark fruit poking through. Some peppery alcohol on the tongue with a good balancing fruitiness finishing semisweet and pleasantly bitter. Very nice, still a great beer after all these years.

Re-Reat 4/30/02 WEll im on resampling streak right now and although i still love this beer it’s not quite the perfection i once thought. Great wine/oak/ripe fruit flavors. A truly great beer. Perfect, simply perfect.

(Re-rate) A hazy dark brown almost ruby colored. Moderate but persistent tan head. Aroma is of vinous fruits(raisons, figs, berries), vanilla, subtle yeast and others, simply stellar. Flavor consists of huge malts that ride along the whole way, clove, maybe mint, marshmellow, vanilla, touch of honey, fruity sweetness (overly ripened cherries?) and yeasty twangs on the side of tounge. Almost thick bodied, very mellow, cant taste the alcohol but can feel it. The yeast is a bit more dominate as it warms but adds another dimension to this gift. This is why we drink beer boys..........
