When held to light beer had many floaties and only let light in at the edges. Nose of spice, yeast, and apple cider. The taste is very grape and wine like. Complex beer. The finish is very yeasty and bread like, a big change from the first sip. Alcohol is decently hidden, but it still warms the mouth. One 12oz can hit ya’.

My ratings on this beer changed very little. The beer looks perfect, and is very complex.. smooth but still slightly acidic. Can be a little harsh sometimes, esp in the linger, still excellent.

A dark ruby-brown beer with a dense, beige head on top. Delicate sweet fruit aroma; raisins, plums, oranges, tangerines... Also fresh-smelling yeast, sweet chocolate and sweet licorice. Taste has a refined sweetness; dark dried fruits and tinned fruit cocktail comes to mind. Also a rich maltiness, leaving flavors of caramel and sweet coffee. Light sparkling, Champagne-like mouthfeel. Almost full-bodied. Pleasant fruity finish. Excellent brew! GRM (1281), Aylmer, Quebec, Canada

Smells like apples, bananas, and pineapples over a musty background. Pours very dark brown with thick long lived head. Tastes like a sharp barleywine with apple, pineapple, banana overtones. Best canadian beer i’ve ever tasted! after4ever (2806), Brier, Washington, USA

Hugely black with an invasively large tannish head that gets in the way of the pour almost instantly. Settles on its terms to a still-impressive bubbly/moussy head. Some slow-rising carb in the visible body. Big dark fruit nose with some sour tartness and even a little bit of the good wild Belgian horse blanket funk. Big, dark, assertive fruit attack with cleansing bubbles and a nice hollow fruit-pith finish. Clean hollow nothing once the beer’s gone down the zero. This is a deep dark rewarding and delicious beer. Cheers again to Unibroue. Theirs must be the best lineup of Belgians in the hemisphere. winegarner (220), san diego, California, USA
| 4.3 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 9/10 | 3/5 | 9/10 | 4/5 | 18/20 | Jun 24, 2006 Poured a cloudy deep reddish brown that almost appears balck. It is capped by a huge light tan head that quickly collapses. Aromas are fleeting but exceptional, Bittersweet chocolate covered cherries, caramelized raisins, a side note of green apples, and a slight menthol-like tingle of alcohol. Flavors are just as deep and enjoyable. A sweetness shines through and blends with the fruit flavors to create candied cherries, strawberries, and plums. The flavors mellow out in the finish and leave a gentle sweetness that does not create the syrupy condition of some overly sweet beers. talon1117 (628), Bellvue, Colorado, USA
| 4.3 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 9/10 | 4/5 | 8/10 | 4/5 | 18/20 | Sep 28, 2006 Updated: Oct 2, 2007After a year of aging... Deep, dark maroon and murky with a huge, light tan, fizzy but pillowy head which has decent longevity and minimal lacing. Nose is very fragrant! Fruity esters dominate with plenty of port notes. Fruits noted include currant, fig, plum, grapes, and backing notes of spices including clove, nutmeg, and allspice; estery yeast presence with miscellaneous anise notes. Flavor is nice and similar to the nose; currants, plums, raisins, and lots of figs some nice chocolate notes and hints at coffee. Alcohol is noted when young, but just adding the port similarities; aging settles it a bit. Sweetness is quite high with little notes to balance, but not necessarily unpleasantly. Palate is medium to full bodied with a nearly lively bit of carbonation and a round, silky mouthfeel. Finishes still sweet like a port, like the bottle suggests, with lingering ripe fruits, yeast, and chocolate flavors. A very vinous and port-like Belgian with plenty of great fruit flavors. Unlike any other BSA I’ve tried but certainly among my favorites; unbalanced and tilted towards the malty, estery notes. A year of aging helped the palate and possibly some fruit flavors (if that was possible), but still a great experience nonetheless.
