There was somewhat of a tan head, but it doesn’t last long. The aroma contains many of the dark fruits that are indicative of this style. Also a touch of breadiness and yeastiness. The taste is very smooth. It is full bodied, yet the individual tastes are quite subdued. They all blend together to form something quite nice. A definite keeper. Don’t mess with this beer, Sleeman!! It was one of my first tastes in an evening and I hurried it a bit. Later, tried it again (after MY head cleared)and discovered wonderful aroma, wine-like. JPDIPSO (4944), Wauwatosa, Wisconsin, USA

That said, my first taste came quickly - lips to bottle while I reach for the glass. A bit assertive out of the bottle. What remained poured to a high head with a murky brown color. Scent of sweet lavender. Very smooth feel. The alcohol really comes out in the finish. Flavors of dark cherries, bananas and currents. Slight oak in the dry finish as it warms. sethdude (611), St. Louis, Missouri, USA

Pours a dark, cloudy red color, with a toasted marshmallow head floating on top. Aroma is largely of cider, some red wine, and a hint of spice. Flavor is very similar to a port wine, which is good because I like port. Begins with a dark fruit taste, a bit of alchohol, and finishes astringent and warm. A very nice, dry strong. I’m glad I got my hands on this when I did. iwantalambic (1389), St. Louis, Missouri, USA

Wonderfully complex, creamy and smooth. Spicy and delicious. The big malts and alcohol soothe the senses, gorgeous. scraff (1955), Baltimore, Maryland, USA
| 4.3 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 9/10 | 4/5 | 8/10 | 4/5 | 18/20 | Sep 28, 2004 Deep dark hazy browns and oranges, thin tan fizzy head. Ultra complex nose of raisin, plum, cherry, brown sugar and spice, with additional red wine notes to boot. Intense vanilla coated dark fruit and spiced fruitcake flavors blend beautifully. Hint of alcohol shows up at cellar temps, but does not overwhelm. Full bodied, fizzy carbonation, dry, dark fruit and caramel finish. Awesome brew! blank (998), Washington, Washington DC, USA

Strong maltiness and sweetness in the first whiff. Wafting more reveals slight fruitiness and some wheat aroma. The taste reminds me of a bock beer mixed with a strong Belgian ale. Finishes very smooth with a hint of fruit and chocolate. Well worth seeking out and trying. Highly recommended!
