How I came upon rating a Upper Canada Dark Ale is unusual. Bar I work at in the Philadelphia ’burbs had a patron drop off a 12-pack he picked-up in Canada because one of the bartenders drinks Canadian beer. Yeah, but he drinks pale lagers so this brown ale has been sitting in the walk-in for the past month. I had no knowledge of this beer or even that it was brewed by Sleemans when I sampled it. Much better brown ale than my expectations, roasted caramel malts, some licorice and sweetness were all well blended.

Best Upper Canada product I’ve tried. A nice red-brown colour and mice malt flavour.

Had on tap at The Spoke. Good session beer, average in evergy respect. Great dark brown colour and nice, but short lived head. Malty with a sweet aroma. I liked this beer, would go well with a meal.

dark brown with some decent head. taste is very complex. light a million different disgusting flavours swirling around your mouth. could be a bad bottle judging by the other scores. undrinkable. drain pour.

nice sweet nose, some fruit. great sweet/malty/bitter finish. On tap this beer is wonderful, in a bottle, leaves alot to be desired.

Fruity nose, dark robost color makes you look forward to the taste, but then the taste is burnt and uninteresting. Possible gayiety is the miasic mist of misery...did not meet my expectations.

[055-20060922] 341mL. Metallic fermented booze aroma. Very dark ruby-brown with a medium lasting off-white creamy head. Prickily boozy flavour, lightly earthy, lightly roasted or burnt. Very astringent and grating on the tongue. Pretty mainstream, can tell it’s standardly-made.

bottle: You know, I was with my dad enjoying a nice spicy meal & we wanted a heavy ale. He choose Newcastle Brown Ale & I choose this - a mistake on my part. I like this beer & had it countless tmes, but right next to the Newcastle, this was clearly inferior. Very drinkable but layers of flavour for brown ale is missing. Just get a Newcastle.
