Commercial Description:
Our newest seasonal, an American barleywine, is a first at the Upstream brewing Company. Not your typical summertime beer, our barleywine is a hearty and rich ale. It has distinctive notes of plums, dates, and malted barley in its aroma. This wonderful bouquet is complemented by its full-bodied taste containing hints of roasted grain and molasses. But beware, this tasty and pleasant beverage packs a punch. having an alcohol content of nearly 12%, the barleywine will be served in a 10 oz. glass.

A hazy dark amber beer with a fast dying beige head. The aroma has strong notes of wood, alcohol, and caramel. The flavor is sweet with strong notes of fruit, and lesser notes of wood, and with the alcohol burning towards the end. The mouthfeel is very thick - like syrup.

Growler... RBSG2006... Clear copper ale with a small, creamy, off-white head. Wonderful aroma releases notes of bourbon, oak, maple syrup, pineapple, vanilla, fuzzy fruit, caramel, mango and honey. Earthy, sweet flavor; light molasses, sour mash, oak and roasted malts. No balance; all alcohol and malty sweetness. Full-bodied and velvety with very light carbonation. Fruity, sweet, bourbony finish. I think this was a sample of Upstream’s new Bourbon Barrel Aged Barley wine, but will hold off until my new friends from Nebraska verify this!

Sampled on 7/15/06 at the RBSG ’06 Grand Tasting out of a growler courtesy of Sledge Jr: Pours a transparent copper orange with a thin, wispy ring of off-white head. Aroma of huge viscous sweet sticky honey and caramel malt with a healthy dose of alcohol. Body starts with a big sticky sweet fruity caramel toffee flavor along with some complex dark fruits, vanilla, butterscotch and a smooth, thick malty palate. Has a sticky warming finish but hides the alcohol relatively well.

RBSG 2006 - DC Grand Tasting Lineup Barrel Aged: Ruby color, light head and lacing. Nose of alcohol, huge sweetness, I think I’m getting the calories just smelling it. The flavor is sweet, "mellony", every kind of sugar and sweet thing ever is in here. Some floral hops. Creamy sweet finish. Low alcohol in the tail. Somewhat balanced.

Growler: Poured a clear dark amber color with a thin tan head. Huge fruitiness in the aroma. Sweet with grapes and prunes. Fruity flavor with some vanilla on the finish. Very sweet. Well hidden alcohol.
