Commercial Description:
Bottle conditioned.
Brewed under direction of Hildegard van Ostaden, formerly at Van Steenberge, now at Koningshoeven - La Trappe brewery.
With its rich foam, hoppy flavour and fine bitterness, Urthel Vlaemse Bock is a special ale with a high drinkability for lovers of the authentic Flemish brewing art. Vlaemse Bock as originally brewed for the winter, but is now available in 33 cl. (330 ml./ 11.2 FL.OZ.), 75 cl. (750 ml./1 PT. 9.4 FL. OZ.) and kegs the whole year. You can only buy Urthel Vlaemse Bock in the United States. This heart-warming dubbel of 7.5% of alcohol, traditionally top fermented and bottle conditioned flamey dark ale has a tastefully rich, malty, slightly sweet flavour. Vlaemse Bock’s very fine distinctive bitterness makes you forget the long cold winter.

750 ml bottle shared by Zinister, 5th bottle sampled at the 1/28 Houston tasting. Pour is brownish-orange with a one inch off-white head. Aroma of vegetables (celery, carrots) dark raisins, some candy sugar sweetness. Taste is raisin-molasses, some of the candy sweetness, which lingers a bit too long. Mouth coating, despite a fairly thin body. Interesting, but not extraordinary. Thanks for sharing Mike.

750ml bottle from O’Brien’s bottle shop. Brew poured a murky brown with a medium sized off white head, some lacing. Spice, herbs, hops, and bread in the nose. Mostly oily mouth feel, with some bitterness on the finish. Another great brew from Urthel!

Dark brown pour with a half-inch off-white head. Earthy, yeasty aroma of malt, raisins, biscuits. Flavor is dark malt with a heavy dose of yeast. Saaz hops are an interesting touch, imparting a sour coppery note to the nose and the flavor. Sweetnes up front with a sugary finish. Very nice.

Bottle from trade with Quake1028. Thanks John! Pours a nice mahogany color with a huge rocky tan head. Aroma of malts, raisins, caramel and spices. Taste is moderately sweet, rather malty with a hint of caramel. Has a bit of a fruity flavor in the finish. I thought this was a nice tasty brew.

11.2 oz bottle. Vlaemse Label. Very active carbonation. Pours a murky brown color with a frothy, bone colored head. Somewhat bready, sweet malt aroma with some prunes and a hint (slightest hint) of some bubblegum phenols. A rich, c hocolatly dubbel with big caramel, toffee and fruit notes. Charcoal-like dry finish. There’s not much bock-like about this beer; it’s a strange name. I really enjoy the beer.

This was a good bock...interesting because it almost seemed to combine a Belgian style with a German Bock.

(750ml bottle, BB 15/03/08) Pours a deep burgundy body with a rocky (root beer float-like) beige head. Aroma of maple syrup, vanilla, cola, plums, and figs. Flavor of raisins, maple syrup, anise, figs, toffee, wood, brown sugar, and toasted malt. A very nice dubbel.
